Bayern Munich’s Nathaniel Brown gives Vincent Kompany more options

Nathaniel Brown is quickly becoming the kind of versatile weapon that Vincent Kompany can use to solve multiple problems for Bayern Munich. His ability to operate in different positions gives the Bayern coach another option in defense and further forward, and it could have consequences for Josip Stanišić’s role in the squad.

According to a report from Bild (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeneß praised Brown’s versatility after his decisive goal against Augsburg, noting that the youngster played at right-back despite originally arriving as a backup for Alphonso Davies.

“He has shown he can play in many positions, even behind the striker. Actually, he was brought in as a left-back, as a backup for Alphonso Davies, who is playing better and better. He [Brown] played at right-back [against Augsburg] and scored a decisive goal. I think we’ll have a lot of fun with him,” Hoeneß said.

That is an encouraging assessment for Kompany, who has already shown a willingness to deploy Brown in unfamiliar roles. Bayern’s official account of the German Supercup victory over Borussia Dortmund also highlighted how Kompany used the former Eintracht Frankfurt player in an attacking midfield role, where he scored on his competitive debut for the club. Brown’s ability to contribute beyond his natural position at left-back gives the coach more ways to adapt his lineup to the opponent and the players available.

The obvious benefit is that Bayern has another player who can cover multiple positions without necessarily requiring a change in personnel. Brown can provide cover on the left, step in at right-back, and potentially offer an attacking solution when Kompany needs more creativity. That flexibility becomes particularly valuable over a long season when injuries, suspensions, and fixture congestion force coaches to get creative.

It also raises an interesting question about Stanišić. The Croatian international has built his value at Bayern partly through his ability to play on either side of the defense. Brown’s emergence as another option at right-back could create more competition for those minutes, especially when Davies is available on the left and Brown is not needed in a more advanced role.

That does not mean Stanišić is suddenly out of favor. His own versatility remains an asset, and Brown still has to establish himself over time. But the more positions Brown can competently fill, the more difficult it becomes for any player in Bayern’s defensive rotation to assume a particular role is guaranteed.

For Kompany, that is a good problem to have. Brown was brought in to provide depth behind Davies, but his performances and adaptability are giving Bayern a much broader set of possibilities. If he continues to deliver in different roles, he could become far more than a backup left-back—and make the competition for places at Bayern that much fiercer.
