BG Pathum United claimed their first win of their AFC Champions League Two campaign when they defeated Tai Po 3-0 at Mong Kok Stadium in Hong Kong on Thursday night.
First-half goals from Anthony Belmonte, Hugo Rama and Ratthasat Buaban set the tone for the Rabbits as they handed the Hong Kong club a third consecutive defeat in Group F.
Pathum took the lead in the 27th minute when Waris Choolthong drew three defenders towards him on the right flank before picking out Belmonte, who fired home into the bottom-right corner from inside the box.
Another lapse in concentration saw Tai Po concede a second through a set-piece when Marin Jurina failed to connect with Rama’s free-kick, with the ball bouncing in front of Tai Po goalkeeper Tse Ka Wing and into the back of the net.
Pathum got their third in the 42nd minute with Chanathip Songkrasin’s through ball releasing Ratthasat, who slotted the ball past Tse.
Pathum will host Tai Po in the return leg on Nov 5 at Pathum Thani Stadium.
“Playing away from home is always a tough challenge. I felt we needed to maintain discipline and I must commend all the players. They showed great tactical discipline. Securing a win away from home is a fantastic way to build momentum,” said Pathum coach Peerapong Pichitchotirat.
“I believe we need to take it one game at a time. Focusing on other teams and their standings doesn’t help us. By the third or fourth game, we’ll have a clearer picture of how to prepare for our opponents.”
