Anne Hathaway’s Verity Faces Massive Box Office Drop, Loses No. 1 Spot

Anne Hathaway’s latest movie just lost its grip on the No. 1 spot after a surprisingly rough second weekend at the box office. The Colleen Hoover adaptation’s steep domestic drop raises serious questions about the rest of its theatrical run.

Verity box office crosses $100 million despite huge drop

Anne Hathaway’s Verity crossed the $100 million mark worldwide after just two weekends in theaters. The Colleen Hoover adaptation earned $114.4 million globally, per Box Office Mojo. However, the film experienced a steep 62.5% second-weekend drop domestically.

Verity earned $12 million in its sophomore frame from 3,572 theaters in North America. As a result, its domestic cumulative total reached $54.3 million. Additionally, the film added 62 theaters in its second weekend compared to its 3,510-location debut.

In its opening weekend, the erotic thriller debuted at No. 1 with $32 million domestically and $62.5 million worldwide. Notably, it surpassed industry projections and gave Amazon MGM Studios a strong return on its $40 million budget. The movie stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett. Michael Showalter directed the production.

Meanwhile, Verity ranks as the second-best global launch among Colleen Hoover adaptations. It trails only 2024’s It Ends With Us, which debuted at $95.6 million worldwide. Furthermore, the film outpaced Hoover’s Regretting You at $23.6 million and Reminders of Him at $28.1 million globally.

Despite the significant drop, the film remains commercially successful against its modest production cost. It has already earned nearly three times its $40 million budget at the worldwide box office. Overseas, Verity claimed the top spot in several markets during its opening weekend. Those territories included the UK at $4.5 million, Brazil at $3.8 million and Australia at $3.1 million.

Critical reception told a different story from its commercial performance. The movie holds a 34% Rotten Tomatoes rating and received a C+ CinemaScore from audiences. The crowd skewed heavily female at 78%, with 38% of ticket buyers aged 25 to 34. Verity still has several key markets left to open in, including Korea on October 22 and Japan on November 6.
