The AEX was trading at 1,124.00 points at 13:13 CET on Friday, November 6, according to the ad-hoc-news.de AEX market update. The index was 0.46% below Thursday’s close of 1,129.22 points, calculated on the basis of the last completed Amsterdam session. Trading in Amsterdam was still underway, making this an intraday report rather than a closing assessment.
Technology sell-off sets the tone
Sentiment remained dominated by the sharp retreat in technology shares on Wall Street and in Asia. Hargreaves Lansdown reported that European markets opened broadly lower after technology stocks were hit in the United States and Asia. The report attributed the pressure to doubts about the pace and profitability of the artificial-intelligence investment boom.
The concerns intensified after the US midterm elections, in which Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress. Investors were assessing whether a Democrat-led US administration could bring tighter scrutiny to artificial-intelligence companies and data-centre construction. That possibility has added to existing questions about stretched valuations, financing costs and the eventual returns on very large AI infrastructure investments.
Chip stocks remain a key AEX influence
The AEX has significant exposure to semiconductor-equipment companies, making the sector’s international moves particularly relevant for the Dutch benchmark. In the previous session, Investing.com, citing Reuters, said technology, basic-materials and oil-and-gas stocks led the AEX lower. ASML, ASM International and BE Semiconductor were among the weakest large constituents in that session.
At midday on Friday, the index therefore remained sensitive to further moves in global technology shares and to changes in expectations for US policy toward AI infrastructure. The 1,124.00-point reading provides a snapshot of the ongoing session; it should not be treated as the AEX’s final level for November 6.
