How Jürgen Klopp motivated Brajan Gruda

Brajan Gruda (22) scored the match-winner as RB Leipzig overcame Dutch counterparts PSV Eindhoven to secure a 1-0 victory in the UEFA Champions League, their first win in this season’s competition.

Leipzig’s star was nominated in Jürgen Klopp’s maiden Germany squad, but a Matchday 4 injury against Bayer Leverkusen saw the 22-year-old withdraw from the squad. Awaiting his Germany debut, Gruda revealed what Klopp said to keep the playmaker on course for another nomination.

“It was very annoying [having to withdraw],” explained Gruda after Leipzig’s win. “But Jürgen Klopp told me: ‘Postponed is not cancelled.’ If I perform well, the chance will come again.”

Germany will travel to Serbia before hosting the Netherlands in their November UEFA Nations League fixtures.

Next up, though, Leipzig face Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. “If we give 100 percent, I think we can beat anyone,” added Gruda. “It’s football, anything can happen. We have a good spirit, we trust each other, and we’ll see what happens.”
