What to expect from Jackie Chan’s new crime thriller
The story blends crime investigation, martial arts, and high-stakes pursuits. Set against the busy backdrop of Macau, the plot kicks off when a ruthless criminal mastermind known as The Shadow pulls off a high-tech heist with his cyber-criminal gang and disappears with billions. The local police struggle to track them down and call in a retired surveillance expert, played by Chan, for help.
He builds an elite unit and trains its members to track down the culprits. The story centers on a cat-and-mouse pursuit between the police and the criminals. Wong uses his experience and traditional tracking methods to help the team investigate. The operation also relies on modern surveillance technology as the police attempt to anticipate the criminals’ next moves in advance.
Tony Leung Ka-Fai plays the antagonist. The film also features Zhang Zifeng, Ci Sha, Wen Junhui, Zhou Zhengjie, and Wang Ziyi. As of writing, the film holds an 83% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, audiences gave it a 97% score. The 141-minute film grossed more than $152 million at the international box office, according to The Numbers.
The film’s success has led to a sequel, which is now in production. Larry Yang returns as director, while Jackie Chan and several others are expected to reprise their respective roles.
