Winter Is Coming—It’s Time to Embrace the Personality Coat

We’re in that part of fall when personality jackets get their short but sweet moment in the spotlight. For a few glorious weeks, we get to pull out those lightweight statement jackets that are so lovingly tucked into our closets—in all their various patterns, colors, and fabrications—wearing them with little underneath. Enjoy this bright and brief shining moment—the time of puffers and the Uniqlo heattech is imminent. Sure, the first wear of a tailored cashmere coat is a jolt of electricity to the wardrobe, but soon enough, it’ll start to feel rote.

Recently, celebrities have been all-in on personality-filled coats that refuse to trade weather preparedness for standout silhouettes, unexpected colors, and funky patterns. In short: cold weather months don’t automatically demand blacks, grays, and camels.

There is perhaps no greater proponent of the statement coat than Jennifer Lawrence. Judging by the roster of outerwear she’s worn over the past month, the actor shows no fear of bold colors or patterns: In early October, she bundled up in a green jacquard Dries Van Noten puffer jacket patterned with delicate orange flowers. At the end of the month, she left the house in a sweeping velvet coat from Colleen Allen. If the duster’s celadon hue wasn’t already a standout, the austere Victorian silhouette made it a true eye-catcher.
