Hulu’s Young Americans pilot has added a familiar face from DC’s Lanterns to its cast, bringing one of the superhero series’ actors into a new political drama. The casting marks another television project for the actor as Hulu builds out its latest pilot.
Lanterns star Poorna Jagannathan lands a role in Hulu’s Young Americans pilot
Poorna Jagannathan will step in the shoes of Maya Washburn, a controversial senator having history with the president. Maya once stood beside the president as a close friend and political ally. Now, she is rallying voters who have grown disillusioned, while her son, played by Sam Rechner, falls for the president’s daughter, portrayed by Billie Boullet (via Deadline).
The creative team behind Young Americans brings together both familiar stars and fresh talent. Natalia Leite is set to direct the pilot, reuniting with Bruce Miller, the mind behind The Handmaid’s Tale. Miller will also executive produce the project with Priscilla Poriand under the White Oak banner.
The ensemble features Jagannathan alongside Foley, Boullet, Rechner, Mia Isaac, Oscar Winter and Lauren Mei. Chris Hutton and Eddie O’Keefe, who developed the series, will handle writing duties and executive production. 20th Television is producing the pilot.
Jagannathan continues to stack up high-profile screen credits. Her recent work includes playing Zoe in HBO’s Lanterns, which stars Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler. Her turn as a villain in Lanterns also earned her widespread praise, with many applauding her performance. She has also appeared as Auntie in Hulu’s Deli Boys and earned recognition for her role in Netflix’s Never Have I Ever. On the film front, she took a leading role in Apple’s Wolfs.
Jagannathan’s next project is the Apple TV crime drama Nocturne, which premieres Oct. 30. Meanwhile, Leite brings experience directing Hulu’s Black Cake, where she helmed the first three episodes, and The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox. She also recently directed a block of Netflix’s Age of Innocence.
