Mathis Albert to the Premier League? These three clubs are watching the U.S. teenager closely

American soccer has a new teenage talent attracting attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Mathis Albert, the 17-year-old Borussia Dortmund winger, is reportedly on the radar of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, all of whom are keeping a close eye on his development.

According to German newspaper Bild, all three Premier League clubs are monitoring the teenager, although Manchester City appears to have the edge in the race to sign him. City’s interest is not new. The club reportedly tried to open talks with Dortmund during the January transfer window and again in the summer.

However, signing Albert will not be easy. Dortmund views him as one of its top prospects for the future and has no current plans to let him go. Recent reports also indicate that none of the interested clubs has made a formal offer, meaning any potential transfer remains at an early stage.

From Dortmund’s academy to making U.S. soccer history

Born May 21, 2009, in Greenville, South Carolina, Albert began his soccer development in the United States before joining the LA Galaxy academy. In 2024, he moved to Germany to join Borussia Dortmund, a club known for developing young talent and giving promising players opportunities with the first team.

After impressing at the youth level, the winger made his Bundesliga debut in April 2026 during Dortmund’s 4-0 win over Freiburg. At 16 years, 11 months and five days old, he became the youngest American to play in Germany’s top flight, breaking the record previously held by Giovanni Reyna.

Albert also made his mark with the U.S. men’s national team. On Sept. 30, 2026, he scored in a 4-2 win over Chile, becoming the youngest goalscorer in USMNT history at the time. Cavan Sullivan broke that record just days later, but Albert’s goal helped put him on the international radar.

Manchester City leads the race for U.S. prospect

Although Arsenal and Liverpool are also keeping tabs on the teenager, Manchester City appears to have been the most proactive in pursuing information about his situation. According to German media reports, City has been tracking Albert for months and is better positioned than its rivals to try to bring him to England.

For Dortmund, the priority is to keep his development on track. Coach Niko Kovac has indicated that the American could see more first-team action, an encouraging sign for a young player looking to establish himself in the professional game.

The question is whether that confidence will translate into more playing time over the coming months. At 17, Albert still has plenty of development ahead of him, but his speed, ability to beat defenders one-on-one and versatility on the wing help explain why some of England’s biggest clubs are already monitoring his progress.

For now, Albert’s immediate future appears to lie in Germany. Interest from the Premier League shows that his profile is growing in the European transfer market, but his next step will depend on both his progress at Dortmund and the club’s plans for one of its most promising young players.
