The Mob — Hulu and Disney+ make 12 celebrities elect a don who decides who gets whacked – Martin Cid Magazine

The Mob, the new reality competition from Hulu, gives a single contestant the power that most shows split between a host, a vote and a twist. A group of celebrities moves into an Italian villa and chooses a don, and from then on that person decides who makes money, who stays and who gets whacked. Parker Posey, of The White Lotus, hosts. Outside the United States, the series streams on Disney+.

Disney’s pitch closes on the question the whole format hangs on: “In a game where power demands absolute loyalty, can the don stay in control, or will the family rise up and overthrow them?” That is the rulebook in one line. The don runs the house, the family can remove the don, and every player has to work out, again and again, whether it pays more to serve the boss or to replace the boss.

How the game works

Hulu’s logline says the celebrities will “shake down, hustle and whack their way to win up to $250,000 in cash prizes.” Every episode, they take on jobs inspired by mob movies to survive. The elected don then holds what Disney calls absolute power over the money, the eliminations and who gets to stay. Players can pledge loyalty to a new don, so whoever holds the chair has to keep the family in line or risk being overthrown.

That is the part that separates The Mob from the show it will be compared to most. In The Traitors, power is hidden: a few players secretly eliminate the others while the rest try to unmask them. Here power sits in the open, with one person, and the only check on it is mutiny. Adam Wood and Mat Steiner of Primal Media, who conceived the format, told Deadline they wanted a show “centred around the most powerful contestant in reality TV history,” a world “where charm, strategy, and survival instincts all collide.”

Hulu has not explained how often the chair can change hands, how the prize money is divided, or what a whacking looks like beyond the word itself. Those are the details the first episodes have to supply.

A cast with mob films on its résumé

Most of the twelve contestants come from reality television, which means most of them have already played some version of this game on camera. Joe Gorga spent years on The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Chelsea Lazkani comes from Selling Sunset, Harry Jowsey from Let’s Marry Harry, Bella Palk from Love Overboard and Willam Belli from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Demi Engemann arrives from The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, which she left after its fourth season.

Bruno Tonioli, the Dancing With the Stars judge, and the rapper Romeo join two names from Bachelor Nation: Maria Georgas, from Joey Graziadei’s season of The Bachelor, and Shane Parton, a contender on Taylor Frankie Paul’s Bachelorette season that never aired. For Parton, this is the first time viewers will actually meet him.

Two actors bring the theme with them. Aida Turturro played Janice, Tony Soprano’s sister, in The Sopranos. Debi Mazar, later a star of Younger, made her film debut in Goodfellas. Deadline called Turturro’s casting “most on-the-nose,” and it is hard to argue: the show has recruited people who have already lived inside the genre it borrows from.

On paper, the mix sets up a clear tension. Reality veterans are used to building alliances in front of cameras. Actors who spent years in fictional crime families know the script the format is quoting. Which of those skills counts for more when one person controls the money is something only the episodes can show.

Parker Posey’s first reality job

The Mob is Posey’s first move into reality competition, as Deadline noted when Hulu announced the series, and she also serves as an executive producer. The Emmy-nominated actress comes to it after a big year as Victoria Ratliff, the pill-popping mother in HBO’s The White Lotus.

Hulu’s cast teaser leaves no doubt about how she plans to play the host. As The Mob Museum in Las Vegas described it, the video introduces the twelve contestants to the Crystals’ “Then He Kissed Me” before Posey steps into the scene and faces the camera. “As for me, I may look cute, but I kinda run the place,” she says. “You think you’ve seen a family like this before? Forget about it!” The teaser then cuts to a soundless black frame, a nod to the final scene of The Sopranos.

Hulu’s answer to The Traitors

Studio Lambert, which produces The Traitors for Peacock and the BBC, makes The Mob with Primal Media, the British company behind the horror game show Release the Hounds. Stephen Lambert is among the executive producers, alongside Tim Harcourt, Jack Burgess and Niall O’Driscoll for Studio Lambert, Wood and Steiner for Primal, and David Mortimer, who runs Primal’s parent company, STV Studios. Susan House is the showrunner.

Rob Mills, who runs unscripted programming at Walt Disney Television, did not hide from the comparison when he spoke to Deadline. “If Traitors is a Knives Out parlor game, this is more The Godfather,” he said. He added that he hoped the new show “feels like its own thing and really special.” Mills described The Mob as part of a concentrated push into serialized competition on Hulu, after some attempts that did not quite work on the streamer, and said he felt it was “one that could really break through.”

The pitch also leans on an old appetite. The author Tod Goldberg told The Mob Museum that the pull of organized-crime stories comes from “living outside the normal rules of civil society.” Asked whether a game show in which contestants get whacked trivializes Mafia violence, he answered that it already is trivialized. The Mob is betting that viewers want the costume of that world, the loyalty oaths and the boss’s chair, without any of its consequences.
