Hugh Jackman and Ridley Scott’s Treasure Island has found its way to Sony Pictures’ theatrical calendar. The upcoming adventure film is based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic pirate novel. Jackman will lead the cast, with Scott directing the new adaptation.
Treasure Island will arrive in theaters on November 11, 2027. Jackman is rumored to star as Long John Silver, one of the story’s main characters. Jack Thorne, who created Netflix’s Adolescence, wrote the screenplay for the adaptation.
What we know about Hugh Jackman’s Treasure Island ahead of its 2027 release
Treasure Island follows Jim Hawkins, a young boy who discovers a treasure map belonging to the notorious pirate Captain Flint. Jim joins a voyage aboard the Hispaniola in search of the buried treasure. However, the expedition soon becomes dangerous when Long John Silver and other members of the crew plan a mutiny.
Stevenson’s Treasure Island was originally published as a book in 1883. The story has since inspired numerous films and television adaptations. It also helped establish several familiar elements of pirate fiction, including treasure maps, buried treasure, mutiny, and the Black Spot.
Scott is directing and producing the new adaptation through his Scott Free banner. Michael Pruss is also producing, while Thorne will serve as an executive producer. The project gives Scott another opportunity to explore an adventure story after directing films such as Gladiator II and Napoleon.
Hugh Jackman is reported to lead the film, but his character details have not been confirmed officially. The supporting cast is still coming together. In an interview with Collider, Scott has discussed Hugh Grant and Adolescence star Owen Cooper as possible additions to the project, although the makers had not finalized their casting at the time.
With Sony now giving Treasure Island a firm theatrical date, the film has taken another step toward its 2027 release. The studio will reveal more details about the cast and production in the coming months.
