Protesters are flooding the streets in major cities across the region, from Milan and Madrid to Lisbon and Tirana. Turmoil in France, Italy, Albania has been characterized by arrests, looting, injuries, and violent clashes.
At the same time, makeshift tent encampments have sprung up in Spain and Portugal as residents rally against prohibitively expensive housing. Young Europeans are wrestling with “a strong sense of uncertainty and a lack of control,” noted María Silvestre, professor of sociology at the University of Deusto in Spain.
“And when specific situations come together, a spark suddenly ignites that is capable of channeling that discontent and driving people into the streets,” she explained.
