Rwanda Coffee Sets New Record at US$452 per Kilo in Online Auction

Kigali (TDI): Rwandan specialty coffee has set another price record. The highest-priced lot at this year’s Best of Rwanda online auction fetched US$452 per kilogram, the National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB) announced.

In total, 31 coffee lots were sold. NAEB said the top price is 66 times the average current international market price of Rwanda coffee exports.

Buyers from Europe, Asia, the United States and Africa took part. The 31 lots came from 320 entries submitted nationwide and were selected after three rounds of sensory evaluation by national and international jurors.

NAEB Chief Executive Officer Claude Bizimana said the result shows what can be achieved when producers, exporters, partners and other stakeholders work together on quality, traceability and sustainability. He said the price reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen quality and traceability across the coffee value chain, from farm to international market.

Evariste Karangwa, owner of K-Organics Ltd, welcomed the outcome and said it would help strengthen quality coffee production and community livelihoods. He described the result as a “testament to the hard work and dedication” that goes into producing quality coffee.

Karangwa said the recognition would let him reinvest in quality farming practices, which he expects to raise the standard of his coffee further and benefit his community.

The auction follows the Best of Rwanda National Specialty Coffee Competition, which NAEB organizes every year. The competition aims to showcase the finest coffee grown by smallholder farmers and to improve their visibility and access to international markets. NAEB said the competition and auction reinforce Rwanda’s position as a leading producer of specialty coffee.

The board said it will continue supporting farmers and widening market opportunities so that Rwandan coffee stays competitive globally and earns more foreign exchange for the country.
