Greta Lee’s Dior Front Row Look Begs the Question: Is the Smoking Jacket Making a Comeback?

Did Greta Lee just bring back the smoking jacket? The actress may have done just that at Dior’s spring 2027 ready-to-wear collection presentation held at Bassin de l’Octogone during Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday.

The “Past Lives” actress wore a satin long-sleeve jacket in cream with a velvety brown soft lapel and elongated collar. Small details in the jacket included a breast pocket and hip flap pockets, along with buttons on the cuffs.

Lee added a pair of satin capris with petal-style hems with her jacket. Finishing touches for the look included a pair of pointed-toe pumps and a set of black shades courtesy of Dior.

Popularized by the mid-19th century, the smoking jacket hasn’t exactly been en vogue. It is, however, a staple and signature of a certain economic echelon, one that evokes certain particulars of excess, luxury and wealth.

Lee has a close relationship with Dior. The actress was named a global ambassador to the French luxury fashion house in September 2025, under the creative direction of Jonathan Anderson, who assumed his role with Dior in April 2025.

“Greta possesses a natural instinct for dressing. She is everything that I imagine the Dior woman to be: talented, exciting, empathetic and she’s great fun to be around,” Anderson said in a statement shared exclusively with WWD.

“I’m beyond honored to step into this new role as a Dior ambassador — a brand that’s pure magic and legendary in every way. To be part of this legacy, especially with Jonathan Anderson at the creative helm, feels like destiny,” Lee said.

Lee joined other high-profile ambassadors and friends of the fashion house like Anya Taylor-Joy and Cynthia Erivo to herald the spring 2027 ready-to-wear collection.

“Anderson was in the mood for romance with waterfall skirts and jackets assembled from hundreds of hand-dyed petals, displayed against a backdrop of trees rising from a fog-shrouded pond,” Joelle Diderich wrote in WWD’s review of the collection.

“The designer has refined a number of codes over the last 12 months, chief among them his idea of ‘broken aristocracy,’ which he channeled into shawl-collared bed jackets, lined with shearling and worn with python-effect metallic pants — another idea lifted from men’s — or checked organza coats with wispy fringing.”
