Bayern Munich 2-2 Arsenal: Declan Rice earns Champions League draw as Luis Díaz suffers injury

There was bad news on two fronts for Bayern. The German champion saw victory slip away in the closing stages against Arsenal and now faces uncertainty over Díaz’s fitness after the Colombian was unable to finish the game.

Díaz began the game on the bench, with Vincent Kompany opting for Alphonso Davies, Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry in support of Harry Kane in Bayern’s attack.

The Gunners took the lead in the 25th minute through Eberechi Eze, who found the net with a low left-footed shot across goal. Bayern responded 10 minutes later, with Davies finishing calmly past David Raya to send the teams into halftime level.

Díaz comes on before suffering injury

Kane converted a penalty in the 61st minute to put Bayern ahead, and seven minutes later Kompany introduced Díaz in place of Saibari.

The Colombian had an opportunity of his own with a right-footed effort from inside the penalty area that forced Raya into a save. That stop became all the more important when Arsenal found an equalizer in the 82nd minute, with Declan Rice finishing off a well-worked team move.

Díaz’s injury occurred after he made a diagonal run before unexpectedly slowing down and abandoning his attempt to reach the ball. He walked back into Bayern’s defensive shape on the right, but shortly afterward, once his team had regained possession, Díaz went to ground and signaled that he needed to come off.

Bara Sapoko Ndiaye replaced him in the 90th minute.

The problem appeared to be muscular, although Bayern’s medical assessment will be needed to establish the nature of the injury and how long Díaz could be sidelined.

It comes at an unfortunate time for the Colombian, who had been in excellent form in the Bundesliga, scoring a hat trick and providing an assist against RB Leipzig.

The draw leaves Bayern with five points after three games in the Champions League league phase. Kompany’s team will now turn its attention to its next Bundesliga game against Freiburg, while also awaiting news on Díaz’s fitness.
