As I stood staring at my overflowing closet, the idea of creating a digital database for every piece in my wardrobe felt insurmountable. Luckily, a team member from the new app Vêtir was en route to do it for me. My day was business as usual as she photographed piece after piece—my studded Khaite bag, a vintage Givenchy top, platform Gucci loafers, and a quirky Simon Miller dress—until, a few hours later, she was finished.
Once my wardrobe was officially in the system, the real fun began. I used the AI Stylist chat to scan my closet and identify any gaps in my wardrobe. The findings? My strengths lie in premium denim, leather, and knitwear, but my closet was missing additional basics like crisp button-downs, trousers, and a sculptural bag. To fill those gaps, it provided several designer options for purchase.
Though plenty of AI-powered closet management apps exist today, Vêtir (French for “to dress”) stands out for its focus on the personal shopping experience, making anyone feel like a Very Important Client—otherwise known as a VIC. Founded by industry vet Kate Davidson Hudson, who’s held positions at ELLE and LuisaViaRoma and cofounded Editorialist, Vêtir employs AI to bring bespoke shopping—which usually includes private appointments, custom curation, and dedicated stylists—together onto a single platform. The company recently raised $5.5 million in a Series A funding round and was valued at $150 million. “What makes Vêtir truly different is that we’re not simply a digital closet app—we’re a digital closet within a much larger, personalized wardrobe operating system,” Davidson Hudson tells ELLE. “We weren’t founded by technologists looking at fashion from the outside. We were built by people who have spent their careers in luxury fashion, editorial, and personal shopping, so we understand that luxury is deeply personal, emotional, and constantly evolving.”
Vêtir makes recommendations based on what you already own, aiming to provide each person with curated options from its many luxury brand partners, which include Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent, Chloé, and Fendi. Through the platform, you can also connect with an AI-powered stylist, as I did, or work with one of Vêtir’s professional stylists to create looks—which you can visualize on your avatar—pulled from your closet, as well as complementary pieces that can be shipped directly to your door. Because the app (as well as its stylists) has access to your entire wardrobe, it gets a big-picture view, enabling it to suggest new ways to style your favorite pieces—and the more it learns about your tastes and preferences, the more personalized its advice will become. For me, that resulted in considering tailored blazers and other menswear-inspired pieces to add structure to my wardrobe.
Finally, for those who love to shop the latest designer collections as they arrive, Vêtir has created its own version of a trunk show, presenting its clients with exclusive first looks and access to covetable items, with the option to purchase the pieces you’re eyeing directly through the app. With a more holistic view into my wardrobe, along with the guidance of a personal stylist, I can now curate a shopping experience tailored precisely to me—all in the palm of my hand.
