Hugh Jackman’s biggest box office bomb just pulled off an unlikely comeback on streaming charts. The A24 thriller topped HBO Max’s rankings within days of its debut, overtaking a $400 million Sydney Sweeney hit.
The Death of Robin Hood is already no. 1 on HBO Max after debut
The Death of Robin Hood landed at No. 1 on HBO Max’s Top 10 movies chart in the United States. Notably, the A24 film hit the streaming platform on Oct. 16 and reached the top spot within days, according to FlixPatrol data for Oct. 20. Additionally, the Hugh Jackman-led thriller also sits at No. 5 on HBO Max’s overall chart from Amazon Channels.
Michael Sarnoski wrote and directed the film, which reimagines the Robin Hood legend as a dark thriller. Jackman stars as an aged Robin Hood tormented by his violent past, alongside Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgard, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe. Essentially, the story follows the outlaw as he takes refuge in a priory after sustaining a grave wound.
The film originally premiered at the 73rd Sydney Film Festival on June 12, 2026. Subsequently, A24 released it theatrically in the United States on June 19, 2026. However, the production carried a $20 million budget and earned only $9.5 million at the box office.
Critical reception landed in mixed territory during its theatrical run. Specifically, the film holds a 69% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 189 critics. Meanwhile, Metacritic assigned a score of 61 out of 100, and CinemaScore audiences gave it a C+ grade.
The Lionsgate psychological thriller The Housemaid sits at No. 2 on the HBO Max movies chart, just behind The Death of Robin Hood. The Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried starrer arrived on HBO Max on Oct. 9 after initially streaming on Starz.
Furthermore, Paul Feig directed the adaptation of Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel, which earned over $400 million worldwide against a $35 million budget. Lionsgate has already greenlit a sequel titled The Housemaid’s Secret, with Sweeney and Michele Morrone set to return.
