‘We had them’ – Tuchel rues fine margins in loss to Spain

After the world’s leading nation – according to FIFA’s rankings – took their second world crown in the United States, Canada and Mexico this summer, De la Fuente feels the award should have a Spanish winner.
“History owes Spanish football more than one Ballon d’Or,” De la Fuente told a press conference ahead of Tuesday’s UEFA Nations League match against Croatia, their first home fixture since winning the World Cup.
“It was a great joy when Rodrigo won it, and now I would wish another Spaniard to win it. It would give me the same thrill whichever of them won.
“Not just because of my relationship with one or another, but because in my view they are the best in the world in their positions.”
On the chances of a Spaniard winning an award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, De la Fuente said: “I think we’ve earned it, and by that, I include my entire staff – the same as others – to be candidates to win it.

Six Spanish players were listed among the 30 nominees for the men’s Ballon d’Or.
Among them, Rodri – after winning the Golden Ball, awarded to the best player at the World Cup – is looking to win the prize for the second time in three years.
Lamine Yamal, meanwhile, could become the youngest Ballon d’Or winner aged 19 after another impressive campaign to help Barcelona win La Liga, alongside his international tournament success.
Pau Cubarsi, Marc Cucurella and Ferran Torres are among the other names alongside Fabian Ruiz – who yet again played a key role in a major competition for Spain, having done so at the 2024 European Championship, and won the UEFA Champions League in back-to-back years with Paris Saint-Germain.
“I don’t know the criteria, but I’ve always said I want a Spaniard to win, both among players and coaches,” De la Fuente added.
“I think we’ve all earned it and time will tell. Being nominated is already a huge recognition and a source of pride; I’m happy.”
After Tuesday’s meeting with Croatia, the world champions host Czechia on October 3, before another clash with Croatia in Split on October 6.
