Saturday
Everton 1-1 Chelsea
Everton are fifth and still unbeaten after six games, with four of those ending level, and they’re on 10 points like Chelsea. Xabi Alonso’s side score plenty (15 goals) but have also let in 13, more than anyone in the top half. Reece James is listed at a 75% chance by the Premier League’s Fantasy game and Jamie Gittens is out, while David Moyes is likely to use Jarrad Branthwaite at left-back again, as our Everton predicted lineup explains. We think Everton’s record of draws holds.
Brentford 2-1 Liverpool
This is the call fans will argue with most. Liverpool lost 3-0 at home to Man City last time out, Ryan Gravenberch is suspended, and Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo are all waiting on Friday’s training after Andoni Iraola refused to rule them in or out on Thursday. Brentford are fourth and unbeaten, and Keith Andrews’ only real worry is Kevin Schade’s shoulder. Even if one or two of Liverpool’s doubts make the bench, we’d back Brentford at home. The full picture is in our press conference round-up.
Fulham 1-1 Hull City
Fulham are bottom with two points and no win yet. Hull have drawn three of their six and are without Nobel Mendy, who has a groin problem. A first Fulham win wouldn’t be a surprise, but nothing in their form says it’s coming here.
Man City 3-0 Ipswich
City have won all six league games and scored 16. The 4-2 Champions League defeat to PSG on Wednesday doesn’t change much: Enzo Maresca has no injuries, and Phil Foden is free to start a league game after his ban. Ipswich are 10th on nine points after beating Fulham 2-1, but they’ve lost three of six. Haaland to score, and City to keep a clean sheet.
Newcastle 2-2 Aston Villa
Villa thrashed Fenerbahce 6-0 on Wednesday, yet they’re 16th in the league with one win. They have no fit senior left-back, so Aaron Wan-Bissaka is expected to cover there. Newcastle lost 4-1 at Coventry on Monday and Matthias Jaissle is still waiting on Bazoumana Touré’s knock. Two leaky defences at St James’ Park points to goals at both ends.
Sunday and Monday
Bournemouth 2-1 Sunderland
Bournemouth are 18th and still looking for a first win after a 5-1 defeat at Chelsea. Sunderland have lost their last three, conceding nine. One of these runs has to end, and we’ll back the home side.
Brighton 2-1 Crystal Palace
Brighton are third with 18 goals, the most in the division, and Pascal Struijk should be back after his red card at Sunderland was overturned. They did play on Thursday in the Conference League, which is the one reason to fancy Palace, who beat Forest 3-1 last time. Brighton’s rotation for that game should limit the damage.
Leeds 2-1 Man Utd
United have one league win from six and arrive without Luke Shaw, Benjamin Sesko, Patrick Dorgu and Manuel Ugarte, with Kobbie Mainoo a doubt (see our Man Utd injury news). Leeds are seventh, beat Newcastle 4-1 in their last home game and lost only narrowly at Arsenal last weekend, even with Joe Rodon out. We think Michael Carrick’s run without a win goes on, and that will only add to the pressure on him. Kick-off is 2pm on Sky Sports.
Nottingham Forest 0-2 Arsenal
Arsenal are second, three points behind City, and beat Lille 3-0 on Tuesday. Piero Hincapie is out for weeks, but Martin Zubimendi is close to a return and Bukayo Saka is available. Forest are 15th and have scored only five in six. Arsenal haven’t been at their best away from home, but a clean sheet looks likely.
Tottenham 2-1 Coventry
Spurs are 19th, haven’t won in the league and have scored only three goals. Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended. Coventry beat Newcastle 4-1 on Monday and have Taiwo Awoniyi back from a three-match ban, so this isn’t a gimme. We’re backing Roberto De Zerbi’s side to finally win one, with James Maddison facing his former club. It kicks off at 8pm on Monday and closes Matchweek 7.
