Burry consolidated his bearish exposure into Nasdaq-100 and VanEck Semiconductor ETF puts, forecasting a major market peak within nine months.
The semiconductor ETF surged 67% year-to-date, with Nvidia, TSMC, and AMD together comprising 34.5% of the fund, making it a concentrated chip bet.
Put options can expire worthless even when the directional call is correct. If Burry’s predicted peak arrives in month nine, both contracts may already be dead.

An investment boom can create real businesses and still leave shareholders paying too much for them. Artificial intelligence presents just that scenario: chip suppliers collect revenue today, while their customers must turn expensive infrastructure into tomorrow’s profits. Investors can still believe in the technology without accepting every price attached to it.

The challenge of funding the AI buildout makes that more than an academic debate. Reuters, put the industry’s required new revenue at $4.2 trillion within five years. Growth alone won’t settle the argument; the return on those investments will.
Billionaire investor Michael Burry, who gained fame during the financial crisis for his bet against the housing market, is positioning his portfolio for market disappointment. But his latest trades suggest a change in how he bets against stocks, without establishing that he has become more bearish than he has been.

Why Didn’t NVDA Make The Top 10 List?
24/7 Wall St has helped investors make money for over two decades, and our top analysts just finished ranking the definitive Top 10 Stocks To Buy Now. Not the ten biggest companies. Not the ten everyone is arguing about. The ten best stocks to buy right now.
And NVDA didn’t make the cut!
The report is free, and you can see why we think each stock is a top investment today.
Earlier this week, Burry wrote on his Cassandra Unchained Substack that he consolidated almost all of his bearish exposure into just two investments: the Nasdaq-100 index and semiconductors. He didn’t go short on them, but rather bought puts on each. Put options are financial contracts that give the owner the right — but not the obligation — to sell an underlying asset at a set price before or on a specific date, For the Nasdaq, his puts expire in April 2027, while his VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SMH) puts expire in June 2027.
Burry said he is retaining his longer-dated puts on Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ:PLTR) and Oracle (NYSE:ORCL), while closing his other bearish positions.
His forecast places a possible major market peak within nine months, giving investors a window for a top, not a promise that stocks will crash by a particular date.
Moving bearish exposure into two baskets changes what can make the trade work. A single company might defy a bearish forecast with an earnings surprise; a basket makes the result depend more on shared market forces.
However, the report doesn’t provide the before-and-after portfolio weights, premiums paid, or comparable exposure figures needed to establish whether his overall wager increased. Fewer positions don’t automatically mean less risk, and broader targets don’t automatically mean a bigger bet.
The semiconductor ETF has gained more than 67% year to date on the backs of stellar performers like Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), which is up 20% in 2026 and represented 19.6% of the ETF; Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM), up 43% and accounting for 9.3% of the fund; and Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD), over 170% higher, and representing 5.6% of total fund holdings. Together, those three represented 34.5% of the fund.
That concentration makes the VanEck Semiconductor ETF a targeted wager against chip leaders, despite its ETF wrapper. Spreading exposure across companies doesn’t eliminate their common dependence on semiconductor demand and investor expectations.
Yet a strong rally doesn’t prove overvaluation either. A stock rising 67% while earnings double would actually become cheaper relative to earnings. Burry needs more than an eye-catching price chart to be right.
His earlier retreat from some bearish AI positions illustrates the difficulty. Burry previously closed his December 2026 Nvidia puts as time decay weighed on the position. A bearish thesis can survive while the instrument used to express it becomes too costly. It explains why he is betting against the Nasdaq as a whole and semiconductor stocks in particular.
The Calendar Can Defeat a Correct Forecast
The Options Industry Council’s long-put guide explains the trade-off: buyers limit their loss to the premium paid, but time generally erodes an option’s value. A purchased put can lose 100% even when the underlying investment suffers a smaller decline.
Consider a hypothetical ETF trading at $100. An $80-strike put purchased for $5 breaks even at $75 at expiration, excluding fees. If the ETF falls 15% to $85, that put expires worthless. The investor correctly predicted the direction and still lost the entire investment.
Before expiration, falling prices or rising expected volatility can lift a put’s resale value. Profit therefore doesn’t always require crossing the expiration break-even price.
There’s another wrinkle: nine months from October extends into July 2027, beyond both reported expirations. A late-window peak could fit the forecast while arriving too late for these contracts.
Key Takeaway
Burry’s repositioning supports a clear verdict: he remains bearish, but the disclosed changes don’t prove he increased his overall bet.
For investors, the useful response is to review overlapping technology exposure and trim positions that exceed their intended allocation. His record of market warnings offers little reason to treat any forecast as a countdown clock. Keep those investments in your portfolio whose earnings prospects justify their prices, but reconsider those requiring flawless growth.
Blindly following any investor, whether Warren Buffett or Burry is gambling, not investing. And copying an options trade without knowing its cost or portfolio role adds a second wager: that your timing matches his.
