A headline on the front page of the physical Daily Mail this morning was, How Kate can win media war with Meghan. My first reaction was to snort, because, how can she not win? I did peek at the article, though, and I was interested to see that the author was essentially saying that Kate’s fashion is too stale for a Princess, and she needs to kick it up a notch.
If you have been reading long enough, you will remember that I believe that Meghan’s introduction into the family back in the day did precipitate a little bit of a fashion shift in Kate. Some people really took offense at this back hen I wrote about it although I don’t know why. It is natural to be inspired and influenced by other people; you don’t need to like them. In any event, I still think that Kate branched out a little more after Meghan joined the family. I am not sure that Meghan’s return will prompt the same response, but it would be interesting if it did. Of course, Meghan’s style was a lot better back in the day. If she exports the bizarre wardrobe she has been sporting stateside to the U.K. (and her recent outing with Malala indicates she might), the only people Meghan will be inspiring are the people who make a living mocking people’s fashion. Still, since I also think Kate’s uniform of trouser suits is pretty bland, I wouldn’t mind if Meghan prompted a shift!
One thing is for sure, Kate brought the Princess vibes last Friday when she stepped out to support William and his Homewards Initiative in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Kate was wearing her Knatchbull Cascade Ruffle Blouse and a tartan skirt by Emilia Wickstead—I have been waiting for a tartan skirt. :-). She was wearing a Catherine Walker coat over the separates and carrying a Mulberry bag.
I loved this ensemble. That blouse is one of my favorite blouses that Kate owns; it always looks stupendous on her. Of course, I loved the skirt, too, and the two together were picture perfect. I would have been just as happy with a shorter jacket with this ensemble, but I liked the long coat, too.
Kate was wearing her Cartier Trinity earrings and wearing Gianvito Rossi heels.
Both William and Kate seemed in excellent spirits during this engagement, and they looked every inch the modern day Prince and Princess of Wales. This Thursday, Harry and Meghan will undertake their first “joint engagement” since returning to the U.K. I consider this event their first real attempt at a return to being royals in the U.K. They have a high bar to compete with. Can’t wait to see how they do…
