Netflix has released the official trailer for The Child, a Spanish drama from director Mariano Barroso. Starring Belén Cuesta and Karra Elejalde, the film explores how a family copes with a tragedy that changes their lives forever.
Based on Fernando Aramburu’s novel, the story focuses on grief, denial, and the struggle to accept a painful loss. Rather than following a typical kidnapping thriller pattern, the film centers on a mother and grandfather coping with a child’s death.

What happens in The Child trailer?
As shown in the trailer, the film follows Mariaje, played by Belén Cuesta, and Nicasio, played by Karra Elejalde. They are the mother and grandfather of a child who died in a gas explosion in the Basque Country in October 1980. The incident shocked the local community and people across Spain, leaving both characters to find a way to live with their loss.
Mariaje and Nicasio struggle to accept what happened. As they try to move forward, they experience unexpected emotions and face the challenge of finding their own ways to cope with grief. The story explores how the same tragedy can affect family members differently and how they attempt to rebuild their lives.
Barroso, who also wrote the screenplay, described the film as a story about finding inner strength in extreme circumstances. The Child draws on a real tragedy while telling a fictional story about family relationships and resilience.
The supporting cast includes Pep Ambròs, Raquel Ferri, Leyre Berrocal and Marco Ibarra. Barroso produces the film alongside Rafael Portela Freire, with Umea Films and Netflix handling production. Marc Gómez del Moral serves as cinematographer, while Fernando Velázquez composed the music.
The film will premiere in Spanish theaters on November 13, 2026, before arriving on Netflix on November 27, 2026.
