A London-based techie has sparked an online debate after questioning why UK employers are recruiting candidates from India despite the availability of local talent. The individual’s account of being overlooked for a role has drawn mixed reactions, with users debating what really matters when companies make hiring decisions.

The tech professional claimed that he had the relevant skills and considerably more experience than the candidate who was ultimately selected. While he clarified that his frustration was not directed at the successful applicant, he questioned the employer’s decision to look beyond London for a suitable candidate.

The issue came to light after an X user, @lukas_ohl, shared a screenshot of what appeared to be a Reddit post in which the Londoner questioned why employers were recruiting from overseas when qualified candidates were already available locally.

In the post, the techie described himself as someone who was born and raised in London. He claimed to have recently applied for a position for which he believed he was well qualified, citing his skills and direct experience in the field.

However, according to his account, the company ultimately offered the role to someone who had relocated from India and allegedly had significantly less experience.

The individual clarified that his frustration was not directed at the person who secured the position but at the employer’s decision. He questioned why a company would look beyond the local talent pool when, according to him, suitable candidates were already available in the same city.

The post was reportedly shared on Reddit’s r/UKJobMarket subreddit but has since been deleted by its author. However, the comments on the thread remain visible.

Meanwhile, the screenshot continues to circulate on X, drawing reactions from users who have offered differing perspectives on the employer’s hiring decision and why the tech professional may have been overlooked.

One user urged the individual not to dwell on a decision that was beyond his control, writing, “No one owes you a job. It’s shit. No point dwelling on it if it’s out of your control. Could be a multitude of reasons. Sometimes direct experience isn’t the advantage one would assume. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and go for the next on.”

Another commenter suggested that the situation reflected a longstanding trend in the technology sector, saying, “This has been happening in IT jobs for well over 15 years. Its cost cutting and companies basically not training people anymore.”

“10x less experience most likely implies this person was too senior for the job they were applying for and it’d have gone to anyone else junior,” said a third user.

Workplace attitude was another factor raised in the discussion. One commenter argued, “Sometimes, it boils down to attitude. The company just want the job done, not complaints.”

Another user made a broader generalisation about differences in workplace behaviour, writing, “Ngl as a British person Indian workers will always just work harder and complain less and most British employers know that.”

However, not everyone was convinced by the original account. One commenter questioned how the applicant could know the selected candidate’s background and experience, asking, “How do you even know who got the role if it’s not within your company? And if they moved to the UK for this role?”
