She said that they used to do it in their character costumes and in trailers. In a recent episode of Dear Chelsea, Russell revealed a bold story from her and Rhys’ early relationship days. She said, “We were falling in love and staying up all night and having sex all the time and just wearing disguises, like, I’m f**king [in] crazy wigs and wearing pearls.”
She further added, referring to what made these sneaky adventures increasingly interesting, “When have you ever worn pearls and [been] f**king in trailers and f**king everywhere. I mean, it was insanity. It was so fun and sneaky, and sexy, and so good.” Russell and Rhys played Elizabeth and Philip Jennings, respectively, on the show.
In a conversation with Late Night with Seth Meyers, Rhys revealed that their relationship was hidden from the cast and crew but eventually became known. This happened when someone broke into Russell’s apartment, and the police brought her items back on the set. A production assistant eventually recognised that the items belonged to Rhys and not Russell. That’s how the production learned about their brewing romance.
After reconnecting on The Americans following their first encounter in 2002, they instantly sparked romance rumors. This happened when the duo was spotted in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood in New York, shopping around. In 2014, they publicly confirmed their romance after they made an appearance to watch Steven Soderbergh’s play The Library at the Public Theater in NYC. In May 2016, they welcomed their first child together, naming him Sam.
