Galatasaray to face Barcelona in Champions League as Spanish record comes under spotlight

Galatasaray will host Barcelona on Oct. 13 in their 342nd European match, with coach Okan Buruk reaching his 40th continental appearance.

Galatasaray will take on Spanish giants Barcelona in the second week of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, Oct. 13, marking their 37th meeting with a Spanish club and their 342nd match in European competitions.

The Istanbul side will also reach another milestone at RAMS Park, where head coach Okan Buruk is set to oversee his 40th European fixture with Galatasaray.

Having faced teams from 37 countries since making their European debut in the 1956-57 season, Galatasaray has recorded 121 wins, 90 draws and 130 defeats across 341 matches, scoring 469 goals and conceding 521.

Barcelona holds commanding advantage in head-to-head record

Galatasaray has faced Barcelona 10 times in European competitions, recording just one victory alongside three draws and six defeats.

Their only win came on Nov. 23, 1994, when they defeated Barcelona 2-1 in the Champions League group stage.

The teams last met in the 2021-22 UEFA Europa League round of 16, when Galatasaray held Barcelona to a goalless draw in Spain before losing 2-1 in Istanbul.

Barcelona has also built up a strong record against Turkish opposition, winning 10 of their 16 European matches against Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, Besiktas and Trabzonspor. Their three defeats came against Galatasaray, Besiktas and Trabzonspor.

Galatasaray seeks to improve record against Spanish clubs

Galatasaray’s overall record against Spanish opposition stands at eight wins, eight draws and 20 defeats from 36 encounters, with 33 goals scored and 67 conceded.

Their first meeting with a Spanish club came against Atletico Madrid in September 1973, when the Turkish side secured a goalless draw in the European Cup, the predecessor of today’s Champions League.

Among their notable results was a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in the 2000 UEFA Super Cup, while their only successful two-legged knockout tie against Spanish opposition came against Real Mallorca in the 1999-2000 UEFA Cup quarterfinals.

Galatasaray won that tie 6-2 on aggregate, following up a 4-1 away victory with a 2-1 home win.

Okan Buruk approaches 40th European match

Buruk, who took charge of Galatasaray in June 2022, has recorded 15 wins, nine draws and 15 defeats in 39 European matches, with his team scoring 68 goals and conceding 73.

The Turkish coach ranks second among Galatasaray managers for European appearances, behind Fatih Terim, who oversaw 93 matches.

Under Buruk, Galatasaray reached the Champions League round of 16 last season after overcoming Italian side Juventus in the knockout playoffs. They subsequently defeated Liverpool 1-0 at home but were eliminated following a 4-0 defeat in England.

Buruk’s European victories with Galatasaray have also included wins over Manchester United, Tottenham and Ajax.

RAMS Park record adds another milestone

Tuesday’s match will also be Galatasaray’s 31st Champions League fixture at RAMS Park, which opened in January 2011.

The Istanbul club have recorded 10 wins, 10 draws and 10 defeats in their previous 30 Champions League matches at the stadium.

Galatasaray has won four of their last 10 home matches in the competition, drawing four and losing two.

Meanwhile, their last 40 European matches have all produced at least one goal, a sequence dating back to the goalless draw against Barcelona in March 2022.

The upcoming encounter will also be Galatasaray’s 171st appearance in Europe’s premier club competition, including matches played under its former European Cup format.
