Jessica Chastain’s latest horror film is receiving mixed reactions from fans after its theatrical release. Other Mommy arrived in theaters on October 9, 2026, but its supernatural premise has not impressed every viewer.
Directed by Rob Savage, Other Mommy adapts Josh Malerman’s horror novel Incidents Around the House. Chastain stars as Ursula and the sinister entity known as Other Mommy, who threatens a young girl named Bela.
The cast features Jay Duplass, Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed, and Karen Allen. Although the film’s trailer promised an unsettling supernatural experience, some viewers have expressed disappointment with the final product.
Other Mommy fan reactions match its Rotten Tomatoes score
Viewers have taken to X to share their thoughts on Other Mommy, with several criticizing its effectiveness as a horror film. @49Nudity posted, “Other Mommy should’ve been a comedy.” The remark captures the frustration of viewers who felt the movie failed to deliver the intended scares.
Another user, @necropolies, questioned the decision to rename the adaptation. They wrote, “the first thing Other Mommy did wrong was rename it from ‘Incidents Around the House’ because it’s just not a creepy title and does a disservice to the book imo.”
Well, not every reaction was negative. @toofpickz said the film looked like something that could “mess with your mind,” acknowledging the potential of its premise. Meanwhile, @CCortave24 criticized the finished film, saying, “The first trailer for Other Mommy ended up being better than the movie?”
The divided reactions follow a disappointing Rotten Tomatoes reception. As of October 9, 2026, Other Mommy has a 19% Tomatometer score, reflecting negative responses from critics. The score may change as additional reviews and ratings come in.
The early response highlights the challenge of turning a disturbing premise into an effective horror experience. While Chastain leads the adaptation, the film’s execution has left some moviegoers unimpressed.
