T-Mobile closes more retail stores

A few weeks ago, my mother picked up a new iPhone at an Apple store and expected to be able to migrate her old phone to the new one there. Unfortunately, because she’s a T-Mobile subscriber, she was not able to do that, as her wireless carrier has to handle the transition.

She solved the problem by driving to a T-Mobile store.

Someone at the store looked up her info, set up the transfer, and after everything was moved over, she left the store with a new phone, her old number, and all of her apps, photos, and settings intact.

That may soon be harder for her and other T-Mobile customers, as the company has decided to close a number of its stores.

Stores are expensive, and while companies rarely frame eliminating them purely as a cost-saving measure, there’s certainly an advantage to routing customers through websites, call centers, and artificial intelligence (AI) helpers.

T-Mobile has decided to cut stores, and the company framed that as a positive in a 10-Q filed with the SEC that covered the period ending June 30.

Shedding stores aligns with the company’s “ongoing digital initiatives to simplify routine transactions, as well as enhance customer experiences by transitioning in part to large-format experience stores,” it shared.

More T-Mobile:

T-Mobile has not shared a list of stores it plans to close. The company is also ending certain deals with partners that operate T-Mobile stores, and those relationships are generally not reported on in earnings reports or SEC filings.

“We began closing certain dealer and corporate-owned stores in the second quarter of 2026. The major costs associated with these retail initiatives include contract termination, severance, and costs associated with terminated operating leases,” it added in the filing.
