It’s no surprise that celebrities are paid (and pay) to look their absolute best on camera. Many celebrities, understandably, don’t like to discuss how they achieve their seemingly ineffable beauty. There is a growing number, however, who have chosen to pull back the metaphorical curtain and show their fans that on-screen beauty is often an illusion. Here are 11 celebs who exposed the truth behind their iconic looks:

1. During a September appearance on Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast, Sandra Bullock revealed that her iconic Miss Congeniality makeover scene actually involved several pieces of shapewear.

Bullock described the Hervé Léger dress as “basically a walking Spanx.” Before the dress even went on, she said, she “put on, like, two sets of Spanx. I had, you know, the little chicken cutlets? I had six of those.”

2. At just 19 years old, Zendaya exposed a magazine for digitally altering her legs and torso to appear thinner, even posting a side-by-side of the two images on Instagram.

3. While promoting his new TV show, Avan Jogia posted two photos on Instagram — one with a flat, muscular stomach and another with a softer, more protruding stomach as a reminder that bodies that may look “completely shredded” are not always the reality.

The former Nickelodeon star wrote that it’s “probably bad for [people’s] brains” to think that actors look their best all the time and that there is a “realistic range of how it all works.”

4. Nineties heartthrob Rupert Everett revealed in 2025 that he wore bodysuits not just for one movie, but in every film for years.

Before he became a bona fide sex symbol, the My Best Friend’s Wedding actor would secretly wear a “false bottom, false calves, false shoulders, false everything,” under his clothes to appear more muscular. He said he would “go into the fittings for the costumes with all [his] things on.”

He captioned the photo with a thoughtful statement, thanking the team who worked around the clock to get him to that point. He said, “I would not have been able to do this if I didn’t have a full year with the best trainers and nutritionists paid for by the biggest studio in the world.”

6. Another Marvel star, Brie Larson, said that building her impressive physique in 2019’s Captain Marvel was nothing less than a “full-time job.”

To achieve her character’s muscular figure, Larson explained that she completed two two-hour workouts every day for several months. None of this, she said, would have been possible without “a nutritionist, two different trainers, a paleo meal delivery service…and a lot of sleep and water.”

7. To play the young and “perfect” Sue in 2024’s The Substance, Margaret Qualley revealed that she wore prosthetic breasts to achieve her character’s Jessica Rabbit-esque curves. She said, “There is no magic boob potion, so we had to glue those on.”

The actor was quick to note that her DDs were not natural by any means and that an “incredible prosthetic team [worked hard] to endow me with the rack of a lifetime, just not my lifetime.”

8. Literal Superman, Henry Cavill, has made it clear multiple times that the ripped six-packs we see on screen often result from dangerous habits, not just extra gym sessions.

The actor explained that he dehydrates himself for three days leading up to any shirtless scene, to drop water weight and define his muscles. It is such a grueling process, he said, that, by the last day, “you can smell water nearby.”

9. Bethenny Frankel is no stranger to honesty, and she showed that in a 2022 Instagram post with a side-by-side of a filtered and unfiltered selfie.

Apparently fed up with social media’s constant false narratives, the TV personality and entrepreneur facetiously captioned the photo, “Hey it’s me, your favorite filtered friend… just making myself look a little better, a little younger, so you think I look better than you. Doesn’t that really build up your self esteem? I spend hours with tech assistants to make myself look good and you feel bad!”

He told Kelly Clarkson in 2022 that “You have to starve yourself [to achieve his Magic Mike physique]. I don’t think that when you’re that lean it’s actually healthy.” He further elaborated, saying he doesn’t know “how people that work a 9–5 actually stay in shape, because it’s [his] full-time job and [he] can barely do it.”

11. And finally, during a 2013 airing of The Talk, four of the five female cohosts removed their hair extensions and/or wigs, showing the audience that everyone in Hollywood, regardless of race or gender, is enhancing their looks in one way or another.

Julie Chen kicked off the unscripted chaos, unclipping her extensions and swinging them above her head, inspiring Kristin Chenoweth, Aisha Tyler, and Sheryl Underwood to do the same.
