The question every Ted Lasso fan has been asking about the Season 4 finale finally has an answer. The show’s co-creator revealed how AFC Richmond’s women’s team truly ended their season and what it means going forward.
Brendan Hunt on how Richmond’s Women’s team ended their Season in Ted Lasso finale
Brendan Hunt revealed in an interview with Deadline how AFC Richmond’s women’s team concluded their season in the Ted Lasso Season 4 finale. The co-creator confirmed the team had already secured promotion in the penultimate episode. Their final achievement came in the season-ending game itself.
Hunt explained that the on-field result mattered less than a different milestone. “They got promoted in the second to last episode, and then the win in the last episode is that they sold out,” Hunt told Deadline. The sellout crowd represented a significant marker for the fledgling women’s side.
The finale also reshaped the women’s team coaching structure going forward. Ted Lasso stepped down as manager and recommended Alice Chilton for the top job. He and Coach Beard will now serve as her assistants next season.
Hunt teased that Ted’s transition to a supporting role may not go smoothly. “Is this a bit pie in the sky for Ted to think he can just shift down to backseat and have someone telling him what to do?” he said. Ted’s motivation stemmed from wanting more time with his son Henry.
Meanwhile, the men’s team appeared to fade from the show’s focus entirely. Roy Kent quit as manager to take charge of Chelsea, creating uncertainty around Brett Goldstein’s future involvement. Hunt clarified there is no expectation of losing Roy and Keeley but acknowledged the actors’ busy schedules require flexibility.
The brief return of the men’s players in the finale carried deliberate purpose. “The men showing up in that last episode was really meant to be a passing-of-the-torch moment,” Hunt said. He added that the show has taken a long view since Season 1 and plans to develop the women’s players further if renewed.
All four seasons of Ted Lasso are available to stream on Apple TV.
