BBC revealed being open to pitches from producers. Several bids have since been pitched for what might be the next chapter of Doctor Who.
Deadline has reported that Jed Mercurio, best known for Bodyguard, Line of Duty, and Bodies, is currently in the lead to bring the series back to life. Hat Trick Mercurio, the company Mercurio leads, has submitted a proposal. Mercurio is attached to the pitch as an executive producer.
Several rival bids have emerged for the sci-fi franchise
After BBC opened the floor for multiple bids, Mercurio is just one of the many pitches that have come the network’s way. Line of Duty producer World Productions has also submitted a pitch, a separate bid from Mercurio’s company. STV Studios has also pitched the show’s next chapter. STV Studios could take the entire franchise north for its upcoming season, moving the production to Scotland.
Now that the pitch deadline has passed, the BBC must negotiate with multiple interested parties. Whatever is decided, developments Russell T Davies made during the end of Ncuti Gatwa‘s run as the Doctor will likely be erased. Gatwa ended his run as the iconic Time Lord after a single season, seemingly regenerating into the second female iteration of the character. This version was played by series alum Billy Piper. She played Rose Tyler during David Tennant’s run with the character.
Other studios that haven’t been reported on could also have submitted pitches for the reboot. The BBC stated in their call for producers that they would like Doctor Who to continue to celebrate “curiosity, courage, intelligence, and compassion.”
