Free AI Character Chat: 7 Apps, 1 in Chapter 11 [2026]

AI character chat free sounds like a simple shopping question until you try to answer it. Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 13, 2026, and the company says paid subscriptions stay active with billing unchanged “for now.” Chai’s paid plans changed names between October 14 and October 18, according to a third-party tracker. Kindroid’s free Lite plan reportedly ended on October 1. The number shoppers want most, how many messages $0 buys, sits behind app screens that change without notice.

This comparison covers seven services: Character.AI, Talkie, Chai, Janitor AI, Nomi, Replika and Kindroid. The short answer as of November 8, 2026 is split. Character.AI and Janitor AI’s in-house model are the two options described as unlimited, but Character.AI is now inside a court-supervised sale process that our Character.AI bankruptcy coverage explains in more depth. Talkie, Chai and Replika all cap the free tier, and none of them publishes a clean first-party number we could verify.

Demand backs the question. People search for ai character chat free, free ai character chat without login, ai character chat no sign up and ai character chat unlimited messages. Readers want three things: no cost, no friction and no cap. We checked each app against all three.

How We Compared Free AI Character Chat Tiers

We did not run message-count tests ourselves, and that matters enough to say first. No lab benchmark exists for free tiers, and the apps change allowances often. So we built the comparison from three evidence grades and labeled every row in the main table with one of them.

  • Grade A: first-party pages fetched on November 8, 2026, including Character.AI’s blog and help center, Replika’s Terms of Service (last updated October 28, 2026), Talkie’s help text and Chai’s pricing page.
  • Grade B: third-party trackers and comparison sites that agree with each other, including AITriedHQ (October 21), CompanionHunt (October 26), TechOrbit HQ (October 30), The Eliza Report (November 5) and Amavie (November 6).
  • Grade C: single reports, conflicting numbers and forum-level claims. These appear in prose only, with a hedge, and never in a table.

“Free” also means three different things in this category. The first is unlimited chat on a basic model, which is how Character.AI and Janitor AI describe their defaults. The second is a metered allowance that refills, which fits Chai and Talkie. The third is a one-time preview, which is how Kindroid’s free access is reportedly structured since October. Nomi and Replika sit between the second and third groups, because their free limits exist but their exact size stays unpublished.

If you only need a general assistant rather than a persona, the same cap logic applies to the big chatbots, and our free tier message cap comparison of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini shows how those allowances moved. For wider coverage of models and chatbots, the AI and machine learning section is the hub. Everything below is about character apps specifically.

Specs Table: 16 Plans Across 7 AI Character Apps

The table below lists every plan we could verify at Grade A or B. “Not established” means our sources did not publish the figure, not that the app has no limit. Prices are US dollars as reported on the dates in the evidence notes above.

Read the table for what is missing. Few rows carry a first-party price or a first-party message count. Character.AI Free is the one row that pairs a first-party statement with an open-ended message allowance. The main hard numeric free allowance we found for Chai is an estimate of about 70 messages per 2 to 3 hours, and it comes from secondary comparisons.

That gap is the real finding. These companies sell memory, voice and personality, and then leave the basic question of how much you can say before the paywall unanswered. Treat every free-tier number in this category as a snapshot, and re-check it in the app before you plan a long story around it.

Character.AI: Unlimited Chat on Paper, a Court Sale in Practice

Character.AI remains the default answer for free AI character chat, mostly because of its free tier. Its September 28, 2026 announcement introduced PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak as free Chat Styles. The company describes PipSqueak 3 as an upgrade for general roleplay and ShortSqueak as tuned for shorter, casual chats. Both are available without a special message cap once rolled out, and the rollout reached free users over the following days, with an update on October 26.

Note what the company calls these. The official post uses the term Chat Styles, which does not necessarily mean standalone foundation models. That distinction matters if you compare Character.AI with Nomi’s Aurora or Kindroid’s Polaris, which are named as language models. According to the company, PipSqueak 3 follows PipSqueak 2, which went to c.ai+ subscribers first.

The paid ladder starts below $5. (c.ai) lite costs $4.99 a month or $2.49 a week, with pricing varying by region. It adds a daily allowance of premium chats on styles such as DeepSqueak and LongSqueak. Once you burn that allowance, your chats fall back to PipSqueak 3. The top tier, c.ai+, has promotional terms of $14.99 for the first three months and then $9.99 a month, or $59.99 for the first year and then $94.99 a year. Those terms sit on a help-center page titled as a summer flash sale and updated October 30, so confirm the offer is still live before you count on it.

Feature differences between Character.AI and its closest rivals are covered in our head-to-head of Replika, Character.AI and Nomi AI. This guide cares about a narrower question: how long the free tier stays the way it is. Character.AI says the platform remains live, services stay accessible and paid subscriptions remain active with billing unchanged “for now.” It also says the company could be wound down if the sale process produces no actionable proposal. The sources we reviewed make no specific promise about the free tier.

Leadership is in flux too. According to a company announcement dated September 18, 2026, CEO Karandeep Anand would join Disney as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. We found no named replacement in the sources reviewed.

Chapter 11 Dates That Matter to Free Users

The sale calendar is public, and it gives free users a rough warning window. Every date below comes from Character.AI’s own notices.

  • October 13, 2026: Character.AI announced a voluntary Chapter 11 process to facilitate a court-supervised sale.
  • October 15: the company filed the Notice of Commencement of its Chapter 11 case, which includes information about the meeting of creditors.
  • November 4: the Bankruptcy Court approved bidding procedures.
  • November 24, 12:00 p.m. ET: deadline to submit a bid for any assets.
  • December 1: auction scheduled, unless canceled or postponed.
  • December 3 and 4, 9:30 a.m. ET: Sale Hearing, unless adjourned.
  • End of November or early December: when the company expects the sale process to be complete.

From November 8, the bid deadline is 16 days away, the auction is 23 days away and the first sale-hearing day is 25 days away. Reports also say Character Technologies filed a form of asset purchase agreement on November 5. That is a step in the process, not a completed deal, and no buyer or price has been confirmed. A new owner could change prices, ads or free allowances, so a free tier that works today is a rental until the court closes the sale. For readers weighing a general-purpose assistant against a character app, our Meta AI vs Grok vs Character.AI comparison covers that trade.

What Character.AI Says About Teen Access

The company’s own words explain why the free tier looks different for younger users. In a help-center post on changes for teens, Character.AI wrote: “We’re making these changes to our under-18 platform in light of the evolving landscape around AI and teens.” The same post gives the rationale: “We have seen recent news reports raising questions, and have received questions from regulators, about the content teens may encounter when chatting with AI and about how open-ended AI chat in general might affect teens, even when content controls work perfectly.”

In November 2025, CNBC reported the company’s description of the move: “These are extraordinary steps for our company, and ones that, in many respects, are more conservative than our peers.” The same report carries a second statement: “We care deeply about the safety of our users and our goal is to provide a space that is engaging and safe.”

For a parent or a teen, the practical meaning is simple. Free open-ended character chat on Character.AI is not the product it once was for under-18 accounts. According to a September 3, 2026 announcement, the company also built an under-18 experience on in-house age-assurance technology and an age-estimation model. Adults get the open-ended tier described above, and teens get a narrower one.

Talkie: Free Chat With a Cap It Does Not Publish

Talkie sells itself as free AI character chat with text and voice, character discovery and user-made characters. The catch sits in the fine print. According to Talkie’s own free-chat page, free or guest access does not mean unlimited messages or access to every model and feature, and the limits depend on the current product interface. That is an honest statement, and it also means no stable public number exists to compare.

Third parties do not fill the gap. A November 6, 2026 comparison on Amavie lists Talkie among services with a free allowance but gives no reliably verified message count. One pricing review dated between October 26 and November 4 describes a daily chat limit and ads. Other lists circulate specific free-message figures, and we could not tie any of them to a first-party source, so we leave them out.

Paid pricing is clearer. Talkie’s FAQ documented Talkie+ at $9.99 a month on October 28, 2026. A second tier, Talkie+ Pro, is reported at $24.99 a month, $59.99 a quarter or $199.99 a year, with daily Gems and exclusive features. Billing follows the App Store or Google Play cycle, so cancellation happens in the store, not in the app. Reports say Talkie+ removes ads and the ordinary chat limit while adding expanded memory, pinned memories, voice calls and extra image generation. Treat that feature list as reported, because only one source describes it.

Two housekeeping details help when you search. Talkie Lab documentation from September 18 to 24, 2026 said the platform was being fine-tuned and upgraded and that character behavior could change after updates. It also said a profile can be edited once every seven days. Separately, one report says the US iOS listing appears as Talkie Lab while the product keeps the Talkie name elsewhere. That is unconfirmed, so search both names before you decide the app is missing. Talkie also publishes a Character.AI alternative page that pitches the service directly at displaced users, which tells you who it expects to gain from the sale.

Who is Talkie for? People who want a mobile-first app with voice and who accept a metered free tier. It is a poor fit if your priority is a guaranteed number of messages per day.

Chai: A Currency System, Not a Message Counter

Chai’s site pitches chat with 25 million AI characters, and the company runs its own models. Chai’s pages describe an in-house model approach and a production blend that now includes 235B A22B mixture-of-experts models, with the company claiming a 25 percent lift in screen time and revenue after the switch. Those are company claims, not independent measurements. Chai’s site also cites a Reuters report dated October 14, 2026 that puts annual revenue at $120 million, which we could not verify elsewhere.

The free tier is where it gets slippery. A TechOrbit HQ comparison dated October 30 estimates about 70 messages every 2 to 3 hours, with ads. A CompanionHunt pricing tracker reported on November 7 that the daily check-in reward fell from 70 pieces to 20. That is a steep cut in the free daily drip. What a piece converts to in messages is not established, so we cannot turn that cut into a message count. Both signals point the same way, though: the free tier tightened.

The paid side changed names in a week. The tracker saw Premium and Ultra on October 14 and Ruby and Diamond on October 18. On an Android test account, Ruby showed at $9.99 a week or $134.99 a year with 900 blue pieces per week, access to all Chai models, up to 20 personas, no ads and unlimited bots. Diamond showed at $19.99 a week or $254.99 a year with 1,800 blue pieces per week. The same tracker saw a web plan called Chai AI Pro at $9.99 a week on October 3. An older comparison lists Premium at $13.99 a month, and that figure now conflicts with the Ruby and Diamond screens.

Weekly billing is the trap. At $9.99 a week, Ruby adds up fast if you stay on the weekly plan all year, and Diamond at $19.99 a week costs more still. The annual prices of $134.99 for Ruby and $254.99 for Diamond come in well below a year of weekly payments, so check the billing period before you tap subscribe. We cover the prices in the pricing section.

A naming warning for searchers: Chai Discovery is a separate protein-drug-design company. News about GSK, Roche, Pfizer and a model called Chai-3 concerns that company, not the character-chat app. Chai Research Corp. runs the consumer app. If a headline mentions antibodies, you are on the wrong Chai.

Janitor AI: Unlimited on the House Model

Janitor AI is the other service described as unlimited at $0. A November 5, 2026 pricing report from The Eliza Report says Janitor AI is free and provides unlimited messages on its in-house model. The qualifier is important. AITriedHQ’s October 21 comparison separates the in-house model from external router models, which carry limits or costs of their own. Unlimited therefore describes one engine, not the whole menu.

Janitor+ costs $12.99 a month or $99 a year. Reported benefits include five times more context, unlimited priority messages, a monthly allowance on frontier models and cosmetic features. Paying annually costs less than twelve monthly payments and brings the effective rate to $8.25 a month. Context length is the benefit that matters most for long roleplay, because a bigger window keeps more of the story in view.

There is also a bring-your-own-model route. A setup guide reportedly describes plugging in an OpenRouter key, with a free DeepSeek model at 50 messages a day, or 1,000 messages a day after a one-time $10 OpenRouter payment. If accurate, the $10 buys a 20-fold daily increase. We could not confirm those figures from a first-party page, so test them before you build a workflow around them.

Janitor AI wins on openness and loses on predictability. You get the highest free ceiling in this guide, but you also get a menu where some choices cost money and some do not, and the labels are not always obvious.

Nomi, Replika and Kindroid: Companion Apps With Thin Free Tiers

The three companion-first apps share one trait: the free tier works as a trial, and the paid tier does the real job. They differ in how openly they say so.

Nomi. Aurora is the newest clearly documented formal model release, while a development line called Cambrian reached version 6 in an October update with no stated public release date. Nomi reportedly retired the earlier Odyssey model on September 30, 2026. The free tier has a daily quota whose size our sources do not publish. Stock anchors can be customized for free, and preview images consume one daily request or credit. Anchor generation costs an anchor pass or 50 credits. The Avatar Creator reportedly requires a subscription, and Nomi’s price shows up as $15.99 a month in reports. The CEO said VR and AR were not expected in 2026, with 2027 only a possibility. For a memory-first companion, Nomi is the usual pick, and our guide to building AI character chat with persistent memory shows what that memory involves under the hood.

Replika. Replika’s Terms of Service, last updated October 28, 2026, say basic features are free but subject to usage limits that the company may change, restrict or withdraw without notice. Paid subscriptions may include allowances such as daily chat replies, daily call minutes or weekly images, and the exact amounts and prices appear at checkout. Lifetime plans give continuing access to the purchased plan, not automatically to every future product. The terms recognize both classic Replika and Replika 2.0. One report puts App Store prices from $7.99, which is a starting figure, not a universal price. Official job listings from late October describe a rebuild focused on paywalls, pricing tests and subscriptions, so expect the free tier to move.

Kindroid. Kindroid’s free Lite plan reportedly ended on October 1, 2026 and gave way to a limited preview. Reports put that preview at 50 messages one time, or 15 in some regions, and we treat that as unconfirmed. According to Kindroid’s documentation, free accounts can use only the Latest (Ember) model in the selector, while paid subscribers get Polaris, its newest language model as of October 5. The documented paid plans are Standard, Ultra and MAX, with a three-day trial. On images, the Palette (V6) selfie engine was documented as updated on October 6, and the default selfie model remains Latest (Atelier). Prices conflict: TechOrbit HQ lists Standard at $13.99 a month or $139.99 a year on the web and $15.99 a month in the mobile apps, while another comparison simply says $15.99.

If you want to test a companion app without paying, Replika’s longer-running free text chat is the safest bet, because its terms at least describe free basic features. Nomi and Kindroid are better thought of as paid products with trials.

Pricing Math: Weekly, Monthly and Annual Costs

Sticker prices hide the billing period. The table normalizes every plan where the sources give both monthly and annual or weekly figures. The effective monthly column is our arithmetic: annual price divided by 12, or weekly price times 52 divided by 12.

Plan Billed monthly Billed annually Effective monthly on annual Annual saving vs 12 months
Character.AI c.ai+ (post-offer rate) $9.99 $94.99 Not listed Not listed
Janitor+ $12.99 $99 $8.25 Not listed
Kindroid Standard (web) $13.99 $139.99 Not listed Not listed
Talkie+ Pro $24.99 $199.99 Not listed Not listed
Chai Ruby (vs weekly billing) Not listed $134.99 $11.25 Not listed
Chai Diamond (vs weekly billing) Not listed $254.99 Not listed Not listed
Character.AI (c.ai) lite $4.99 Not offered in sources $4.99 Weekly rate equals $10.79/month
Talkie+ $9.99 Not verified $9.99 Not established
Nomi $15.99 (reported) Not verified $15.99 Not established
Replika (App Store start) $7.99 (reported) Set at checkout Not established Not established

Two results stand out. First, Chai’s weekly billing is the costliest structure in the group, far above the price of the annual option. Second, the lowest entry point is (c.ai) lite at $4.99 a month, or $2.49 a week for the same plan.

The Character.AI promotion adds another angle. The first-year offer of $59.99 undercuts the $94.99 annual rate by a wide margin, and lands almost exactly on twelve months of (c.ai) lite at $59.88. The three-month offer costs $14.99 up front and then $9.99 a month, which adds up to more than the annual rate over a year. If you want c.ai+ and the offer is still open, the first-year deal is the only structure that clearly wins. Given the Chapter 11 timeline, though, paying a full year up front to a company in a court sale is a risk the monthly options avoid.

Source Cross-Check: Where the Numbers Disagree

With no standard benchmark for free tiers, the next best test is whether independent sources agree. We compared six sources: AITriedHQ, CompanionHunt, TechOrbit HQ, The Eliza Report, Amavie and The AI Future, plus each company’s own pages. The table shows where they line up and what we did when they did not.

Data point Source one Source two Our call
Chai free limit TechOrbit HQ, Oct 30: about 70 messages per 2 to 3 hours, with ads CompanionHunt, Nov 7: daily check-in reward fell from 70 to 20 pieces Treat as unstable, no fixed count
Kindroid Standard price TechOrbit HQ: $13.99/month or $139.99/year on web, $15.99 mobile Another comparison: $15.99/month Use $13.99 web and $15.99 mobile
Janitor AI usage The Eliza Report, Nov 5: unlimited on the in-house model AITriedHQ, Oct 21: external router models carry limits or costs Unlimited on the house model only
Replika price The Eliza Report, Nov 5: App Store prices start at $7.99 Replika Terms, Oct 28: prices shown at checkout $7.99 is a floor on the App Store only
Talkie limit and price Amavie, Nov 6: $9.99/month, no reliable message count Talkie FAQ, Oct 28: Talkie+ at $9.99/month Price confirmed, limit not
Character.AI free cap Character.AI blog, Sep 28: no special cap on PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak A secondary comparison, Oct 20: unlimited free messages Sources agree, with the sale caveat
Kindroid free plan The AI Future and TechOrbit HQ: free Lite plan ended Oct 1 AITriedHQ: same Oct 1 end date Treat as ended, replacement terms unconfirmed

Real-World Examples: Six Situations, Six Choices

Specs only matter when they meet a real week of use. These six cases come from events and rules documented in the sources above, and each shows how a free tier behaves under pressure.

  • The Character.AI loyalist on October 13. A user with years of saved chats read the Chapter 11 notice and saw that the service stays live. The company’s own wording was that billing stays unchanged “for now.” The smart move was not to leave but to copy character definitions into a text file, because a sale hearing is scheduled for December 3 and 4.
  • The Chai subscriber between October 14 and 18. A tracker saw Premium and Ultra on one day and Ruby and Diamond four days later. Anyone who subscribed on a weekly plan at $9.99 was being charged every week without noticing. The fix is a two-minute check of the billing period.
  • The Chai free user on November 7. The daily check-in reward dropped from 70 pieces to 20. Nothing in the app announced it. Users who relied on the drip found their sessions ending sooner.
  • The Kindroid free user after October 1. Reports say the free Lite plan ended and a one-time preview replaced it. Anyone who had planned a long story on the free plan had to pick between a paid plan and a different app. According to Kindroid documentation, free accounts that remain are limited to the Latest (Ember) model, while Polaris sits behind payment.
  • The long-form roleplayer on Janitor AI. Unlimited messages on the in-house model mean a 200-turn story costs nothing. The risk appears when the user switches to an external model through the router and meets limits or per-message charges. Staying on the house model avoids that.
  • The Replika user reading the new terms. The October 28 Terms of Service reserve the right to change, restrict or withdraw free usage limits without notice and to rename or retire plans. A lifetime buyer should read section 2.7 on legacy and grandfathered plans, because lifetime access covers the purchased plan, not every future Replika product.

The pattern is consistent. Free tiers in this category move faster than the marketing pages that describe them. The users who fared best kept their own copies of what mattered and checked billing periods before paying.

Best Free AI Character Chat by Use Case

No single app wins every job. Pick by what you do most.

  • Most free chat with no counting: Character.AI on PipSqueak 3 or ShortSqueak, with Janitor AI’s in-house model as the backup. Keep a copy of your characters until the sale closes.
  • Long roleplay with deep context: Janitor AI, where the in-house model is unlimited and Janitor+ adds five times more context. Our guide to the best AI chatbot for roleplay covers prompt setup for this style.
  • One steady companion: Replika for the longest-running free text chat, or Nomi if memory matters more than price and you are willing to pay $15.99 a month.
  • Customization and selfies: Kindroid, whose Palette (V6) selfie engine and Polaris model are the most documented in this group, though the free tier is thin.
  • Voice and discovery on mobile: Talkie or Chai, accepting a metered free tier. Check Chai’s billing period before paying.
  • Lowest paid entry: (c.ai) lite at $4.99 a month, Replika from $7.99 on the App Store, or Janitor+ at $8.25 a month on the annual plan.
  • Login-free tries: Talkie’s free-chat page refers to guest access. For general assistants that need no account, see our test of AI chat with no sign-up.
  • A helper, not a persona: If the goal is answers, a general chatbot beats a character app. Our roundup of free AI chatbot picks lists six.

Migration Guide: Leaving Character.AI in 7 Steps

You do not have to leave Character.AI today. The service is live, and the sale may end well. But a portable copy of your characters is cheap insurance. None of the sources we reviewed describes a one-click transfer between character apps, so the process is manual.

  1. Inventory your characters. Copy each name, greeting, description and sample dialogue into a plain text file.
  2. Summarize your best chats. Write a short story-so-far for every chat you care about. Under 150 words each is enough.
  3. Check your billing. Several apps bill through the App Store or Google Play, so cancellation happens in the store. Note the renewal date before the sale closes.
  4. Pick a target by job. Use the use-case list above. Do not pay annually until you have tested the free tier for a week.
  5. Rebuild each persona with a card. The template below works in any app that accepts a free-text definition.
  6. Run a consistency check. Send the same three prompts to the old and new versions. Our persona consistency test for Character.AI alternatives shows a repeatable way to do it.
  7. Review data settings. Check each app’s privacy page and account settings before you type personal details. Replika’s terms, for example, list a section on cancellation and account deletion.

Pros and Cons of Each Free AI Character Chat

App Pros Cons
Character.AI No special cap on PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak. Cheapest paid entry at $4.99/month. In Chapter 11 with a sale hearing December 3 and 4. Teen accounts lose open-ended chat. Promo terms may have lapsed.
Talkie Text and voice. Guest access referenced on its free-chat page. Talkie+ at $9.99/month is documented. Free tier is not unlimited and the count is unpublished. Top tier reaches $199.99/year.
Chai Huge character catalog. Annual plans cost far less than weekly billing. Weekly billing runs $9.99 to $19.99 a week. Plan names and free rewards changed within weeks.
Janitor AI Unlimited on the in-house model. Janitor+ annual works out to $8.25/month with five times more context. External models carry limits or costs. Unlimited applies to one engine only.
Nomi Aurora is a clearly documented model release. Stock anchors are free to customize. Free daily quota size unpublished. Reported $15.99/month is the highest monthly price here.
Replika Free basic features per its terms. Lifetime plans exist. Cheapest reported App Store start at $7.99. Limits can change without notice. No universal price list. Product is mid-rebuild.
Kindroid Documented Polaris model and Palette (V6) selfies. Three-day trial on paid plans. Free Lite plan reportedly ended October 1. Price conflicts between $13.99 and $15.99.

The table gives the shape of the market. Free is generous only where the company controls its own model cost, which is why Character.AI and Janitor AI can promise unlimited chat on a house model. Where an app leans on metered currencies, as Chai does, or on previews, as Kindroid reportedly does, the free tier works as a sales funnel.

Verdict: Which Free AI Character Chat Should You Use

The takeaway: use Character.AI free if you want the most chat with the least friction, and treat it as a rental until the sale closes. Its default Chat Styles carry no special cap, its paid entry price of $4.99 a month is the lowest verified here, and its Chapter 11 calendar is public. The three dates to watch are November 24 for bids, December 1 for the auction and December 3 and 4 for the sale hearing.

Use Janitor AI free if your priority is session length. It is the only other service described as unlimited at $0, and Janitor+ at $99 a year (an effective $8.25 a month) adds five times more context. Stay on the in-house model to keep it free.

Pay only after a week of testing. If you do pay, annual options include c.ai+ at $94.99 a year and Janitor+ at $99 a year. Avoid Chai’s weekly plans unless you plan to cancel within days, because $9.99 a week adds up fast. Pick Nomi when memory matters and the $15.99 monthly price is acceptable, and pick Kindroid when customization matters and you can tolerate conflicting prices. Replika remains the low-risk place to test a companion app, but its own terms say free limits can change at any time.

Whichever AI character chat free tier you choose, save your own copy of the characters you care about. Every cap, price and plan name in this guide is a November 8, 2026 snapshot, and the sources show how quickly those snapshots go stale. Several have already moved this autumn.
