Stephen King jokingly addressed his own eventual demise in a recent interview with Joy Behar on The View. The horror icon sat with the longtime host and other panelists to promote his new book, Other Worlds Than These.
Speaking on The View, Behar asked King how many hours he spends writing his books. King initially replied, “Usually three,” prompting the 84-year-old co-host to clarify, “Every day, seven days a week.” The author added, “You gotta keep it fresh,” drawing praise and applause from the audience.
The horror writer also reflected on his aging and own mortality. “You know, the other thing is I’m not as young as I used to be. I know that I look young, but I’m really not,” the 79-year-old said. He added, “And so, God will shut me up eventually, but hopefully not too soon.”
Behar immediately responded, “Don’t even say that!” Meanwhile, fellow co-host Ana Navarro reassured the author that his books would outlive him. “Your books are eternal,” Navarro told King. The author responded modestly, “I don’t know about that. That’s kind to say.”
Stephen King’s dark humor is nothing new, but his legacy will live on
King’s decades-long literary career has already established him as one of the most influential authors of modern horror. His books never disappointed readers, and some even made it to the big screen. There are over 80 movie adaptations based on Stephen King’s work, and it would easily surpass 100 when factoring in television and other entertainment media.
His celebrated works include Carrie, The Shining, It, Misery, Pet Sematary, and The Green Mile. These stories have reached audiences through different adaptations, extending King’s influence beyond literature.
King’s debut novel Carrie has been adapted into three feature-length films. The story follows a bullied teenager who discovers telekinetic abilities and uses them against her classmates.
King’s longtime collaborator Mike Flanagan recently adapted it for Prime Video. Carrie has been renewed for a second season.
