Here at T&C, we pride ourselves on our discerning eye for quality. With Tried & True, our editors will give you an inside look at the pieces they simply cannot live without.
Every decade comes with its select few It-fashion pieces. During the ‘70s it was the Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress. By the ‘90s it was Calvin Klein anything, followed by the Fendi Baguette. In the early aughts, it was easily rag & bone’s Newbury Boots.
Sometime between 2009 and 2014, celebs from Jessica Alba to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley to Rachel Bilson, Hillary Duff, Sienna Miller (the list goes on) were frequently spotted wearing the round-toe heeled booties. Now, in time for boot season, rag & bone has reintroduced the iconic pair in its latest collection and reimagined it for the modern woman.
The refreshed Newburys retain the signature stacked, 3-inch heel of the original but with a pointed toe and details inspired by a classic Chelsea boot. In addition to black leather, the boots are also available in other colorways and finishes, including Italian suede and hair calf. The chocolate suede, which is what I own, is really soft and supple, and has a really beautiful nap to it. You can really tell the quality by just brushing the hands along the grain.
While I can’t speak to the comfort of the OG style of the same name (I was only just in high school then!), the latest version is crazy comfy. Rag & bone lines the shoes with a dual-layer of OrthoLite© foam insoles, which provide plush, cushioned comfort, making them ideal for daily wear. For me, the true test of a comfortable pair of boots is wearing them on a day spent running from one appointment to the next. If I get through the day without any aches or blisters, that’s how I know they’re keepers. And these, I can confirm, are definitely keepers.
To be honest, when I first got them, I didn’t think I was going to love them as much as I do now. Don’t get me wrong the boots are gorgeous, but I don’t usually gravitate towards western-inspired styles. These have actually been the boots I’ve been reaching for most in the last couple of weeks because of their versatility, walkability, and comfort. And with cold weather finally arriving to New York, I am already banking on them being my most-worn pair for fall overall.
