Dr. Seuss, real name Theodor Seuss Geisel, is one of the most iconic children’s authors of all time. His stories have been popular for almost over 100 years, and some of his biggest stories have been turned into major blockbusters.

One of his most popular stories, The Cat in the Hat, has a fresh adaptation out in theaters now. Starring Bill Hader, Matt Berry, Quinta Brunson, Xochitl Gomez, Giancarlo Esposito, America Ferrera, and more, it’s the latest in a long line of Dr. Seuss movies.

In celebration of the movie, we’re taking a look at five of the best movies which have been made based on his iconic stories.

5 best Dr. Seuss movies ranked

5) The Cat in the Hat

2003’s The Cat in the Hat adaptation remains largely iconic thanks to Mike Myers’ absolutely chaotic portrayal of the titular Cat. However, the actual movie itself remains mostly forgettable. While it did try its best to capture the wild visuals of Seuss in real-life, the movie ended up looking more like a nightmarish combination of Seuss and the real world.

Still, the movie does have some charm. Spencer Breslin and Dakota Fanning’s Conrad and Sally are excellent with Myers, and its adult cast, led by Alec Baldwin and Kelly Preston, are also hilarious at times.

4) The Grinch

The story of the Grinch is probably Seuss’ most iconic work, and nearly every adaptation shows exactly why…except for this one. 2018’s The Grinch stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role, as he looks to stop Whoville from celebrating Christmas by stealing all of their decorations and presents.

The film was undoubtedly a success, and is still the highest-grossing Christmas film in history. However, when compared to other Grinch adaptations, it doesn’t capture the Christmas magic that others do. That said, it is one of Illumination’s best looking movies, so still worth the watch.

3) The Lorax

2012’s The Lorax features an absolutely all-star cast, but gets a little too lost in itself to really rise above the rest of the Dr. Seuss adaptations. Due to the short nature of the story, The Lorax movie expands on the story of the Lorax and the mysterious boy who visits the Once-ler, now named Ted in the movie.

Thanks to some of the extended stuff, The Lorax ends up failing to live up to how good the actual Dr. Seuss book is. However, it’s still a charming movie with a message that resonates even to this day.

2) Horton Hears a Who!

Horton Hears a Who! has a good argument for being the best Dr. Seuss adaptation to come out yet. Released in 2008 after The Cat in the Hat’s box office failure, this animated movie goes back to the roots of what makes a Dr. Seuss story so charming.

While the story seems outlandish, the film (much like the book) is a heartwarming tale of caring for your fellow neighbor, and does a great job embodying that. It clearly respects the original source material, and also features some amazing gags that can only be achieved through animation.

1) How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Of course, there can be only one movie at the top of this list. How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ live-action movie might not live up to the legendary status of the animated short, but it’s hard to deny how fun the movie is. Jim Carrey’s portrayal of the Grinch is in the Christmas movie canon, and the film’s attention to detail in how Whoville is built is something to marvel at.

The movie does suffer from similar problems as 2003’s The Cat in the Hat, mainly in its use of real-life references. Still, it’s become a yearly Christmas tradition worth checking out.
