Titled “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday”, the exhibition will explore how designers transform familiar garments, from jeans and T-shirts to coats and jumpers, into extraordinary fashion creations.
The Met Gala will take place in New York on Monday, 3 May 2027, with the exhibition opening to the public on 9 May.
Organised by Andrew Bolton, the exhibition will feature more than 200 pieces, including Brooke Shields’ famous Calvin Klein jeans and designs made from unconventional materials such as paper, plastic and aluminium.
The theme also highlights sustainability, recycling and the creativity found in ordinary clothing.
While the official dress code has yet to be announced, celebrities could be inspired to reinvent everyday wardrobe staples for the red carpet.
The new theme replaces a previously planned exhibition dedicated to designer John Galliano, which was cancelled following controversy surrounding his past remarks.
The exhibition will run until 9 January 2028.
