New Delhi: Several flights made emergency landings across Europe on Thursday after being diverted following bomb threats, officials said. Sharing details, Finnair said that Flight 1761, travelling from Helsinki to Rome, received a bomb threat. However, nothing suspicious was found during a search after the aircraft landed safely in the Italian capital.
In addition, three Ryanair flights heading to Sofia, Bulgaria, made emergency landings following bomb threats.
Several flights diverted
According to officials, one flight from Copenhagen, Denmark, and another from Madrid landed safely at Vasil Levski Airport in Sofia. Another flight, travelling from London’s Stansted Airport to Sofia, was diverted and landed at Plovdiv Airport in Bulgaria, the Associated Press (AP) reported.
Separately, a flight from Ireland to Italy was diverted to a military airbase in western France, according to the office of the French Prime Minister. Flight-tracking websites indicated that the Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Rome was heading towards Paris before reportedly diverting towards Evreux.
Notably, several flights received bomb threats earlier this week. These included flights operated by Polish airline LOT, Scandinavian Airlines, Wizz Air and Ryanair. Earlier, a plane heading to Bulgaria was diverted to Hungary after receiving a bomb threat while in flight.
While bomb threats are not new to the aviation sector, the latest incidents come amid heightened geopolitical tensions and growing concerns over disruptions across Europe.
In recent times, Europe has also witnessed reports of supermarket refrigeration system disruptions, drone incursions and mysterious alerts on emergency notification apps.
