With The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake upon us, now is the perfect time for Nintendo to consider giving another classic Zelda title a chance to shine: Majora’s Mask.

The Legend of Zelda franchise is a crown jewel of Nintendo, and to mark the iconic franchise’s 40th anniversary, a full remake of Ocarina of Time is coming to the Switch 2. With new and improved graphics, voice acting, updated controls and even an expanded story, it’s the perfect time to introduce younger Zelda fans to the hit 1998 Nintendo 64 title while also sucking old-school Zelda fans back into the action.

But while everyone is busy preparing to return to Hyrule, there’s another Nintendo 64 classic that deserves a similar return to the spotlight. One that may have been underrated at launch but has since built a cult following. With Ocarina of Time getting a full remake, Nintendo’s next logical step should be to revisit The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask.

However, its unusual structure, unsettling atmosphere, and genuinely heartbreaking moments have helped it develop a passionate following. It’s a very different kind of Zelda adventure, and that’s precisely why it deserves another chance to shine.

Majora’s Mask Is the Perfect Follow-Up to Ocarina of Time

From a practical perspective, remaking Majora’s Mask makes a lot of sense. The game is a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time, following the same incarnation of Link after his previous adventure. Since the most recent entries in the series have all taken place in Hyrule, remaking Majora’s Mask is also a fantastic opportunity to take players to a fresh location.

For those unfamiliar with the story of Majora’s Mask, Link enters the strange, parallel world of Termina. What follows is a high-stress, race-against-the-clock (literally) effort to stop the moon from crashing into the land in just three days and defeat Skull Kid.

The connection between the two games goes beyond their shared protagonist. Majora’s Mask famously reused many character models, assets, and animations from Ocarina of Time, transforming familiar faces into the inhabitants of an entirely different world.

Of course, a remake shouldn’t simply be a copy-and-paste job. Termina needs to retain its own identity, and its bizarre inhabitants and unsettling atmosphere deserve the same care as Hyrule. Still, the foundations are already there, making it difficult not to imagine what Nintendo could accomplish with a modern version.

A Zelda Game That Deserves More Love

Of all the classic Zelda titles to get this flashy remake treatment first, it’s no surprise Nintendo chose Ocarina of Time. Often hailed as one of the greatest video games of all time, OOT was revolutionary on release, and despite being almost 30 years old, its legacy endures.

However, Majora’s Mask has slowly but surely carved out its own legacy.

Rather than recreating its predecessor’s sweeping adventure, the sequel takes a smaller, stranger, and far more melancholic approach. Termina feels like a world that exists independently of Link, filled with people who have their own routines, relationships, worries, and plans.

The three-day cycle gives those lives an unusual sense of urgency, a far cry from the giant open-world approach taken in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Living up to its name, masks play a massive role in this sequel. Collecting them all is optional, but some are vital to your playthrough, including those that let Link transform into a Goron and a Zora. As the only entry in the franchise to include this mechanic, Majora’s Mask has one of the most unique gameplay styles in the series, and seeing it brought to life on the Switch 2 would be a real treat.

Characters continue going about their business as the moon inches closer, and players must learn their schedules to help them, uncover secrets, and complete side quests before time runs out. This gives Majora’s Mask an emotional quality few other entries in the series have replicated.

That combination of melancholy, mystery, and inventive gameplay is exactly what makes Majora’s Mask so memorable. A remake could introduce those qualities to players who have never experienced the original, while giving longtime fans another reason to revisit Termina.

Nintendo Needs to Bring Back Zelda’s Spookier Side

One of the biggest reasons Majora’s Mask stands out is its willingness to get genuinely unsettling. You’d be hard-pressed to find a child who wasn’t a bit terrified of playing the game in the early 2000s. Even now, as an adult, it still feels deeply eerie. From the grotesque transformation masks to the moon’s increasingly ominous presence, almost everything about the game feels a little wrong. Its characters can be eccentric, its environments can feel strangely lonely, and its story explores loss, grief, fear, and the inevitability of death.

It’s a far cry from the more traditional fantasy adventures that define much of the franchise.

A modern remake could make those moments even more effective. Updated lighting, richer environments, improved character animations, and a more atmospheric soundtrack could bring Termina to life without sacrificing the distinctive visual identity that made the original so memorable.

Nintendo would need to strike a careful balance between modernising the experience and preserving the original’s unsettling charm. Get that right, and a remake could become one of the most distinctive entries in the modern Zelda catalogue.

Fans Have Already Made Their Interest Clear

Revisiting Majora’s Mask isn’t exactly a new idea. Nintendo previously released The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D for Nintendo 3DS in 2015, bringing enhanced visuals and gameplay adjustments to the classic. That release showed the game could be reworked for new hardware while keeping its core identity. However, a modern console remake on the Switch 2 would offer a different opportunity, with the potential for a much more substantial visual overhaul and updated presentation.

Online discussions also show strong interest in another version. Throughout 2026, the main Majora’s Mask Reddit has been flooded with posts regarding the possible remake.

One recent thread theorised that a Majora’s Mask remake could release as soon as 2027. However, other users noted this might be “too optimistic” of a release window. Regardless, there’s a general consensus that a Majora’s Mask remake is on the way; it’s just a matter of time.

Still, the continued interest makes one thing clear: Majora’s Mask hasn’t been forgotten.

Could a Majora’s Mask Remake Already Be in Development?

As with any major pop culture release, we can look to merchandise and toys for clues. As part of The Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary celebrations, Nintendo has recently rolled out new themed collectibles, Nintendo Switch Online profile icons, and Majora’s Mask music. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. While these additions are officially part of the anniversary celebrations, the sudden spotlight on Link’s darker adventure has inevitably fuelled speculation that Nintendo could be preparing something bigger.

Arguably one of the most promising teases so far is that Majora’s Mask HD is among the upcoming projects listed on Link voice actor Nobuyuki Hiyama’s IMDb profile. The listing fuelled speculation when it was first made in July 2026 that a new version could be in development. Despite the attention it has garnered, Hiyama has yet to remove the project from his IMDb profile, so this remains a promising lead.

While it is important to note that none of the above points mention are in any way official confirmation, it’s hard to ignore the writing on the wall. Even so, the timing is intriguing. With Ocarina of Time getting a major remake, Nintendo has a clear opportunity to bring its sequel back into the spotlight.

Which Other Legend of Zelda Games Could Get Remake Treatment Soon?

While Majora’s Mask deserves to be next in line and is undoubtedly a fan favourite to receive this treatment, it isn’t the only darker Zelda adventure that deserves another chance.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is another standout entry that could benefit from a modern remake, particularly for fans who want to see Nintendo bring back the franchise’s spookier side.

Released in 2006, Twilight Princess took a more mature approach to the series, with a darker atmosphere, a haunting Hyrule, and Link’s ability to transform into a wolf. Its story, memorable dungeons, and more grounded take on the fantasy world helped make it a fan favourite, and a full remake could give it the visual overhaul it deserves.

What’s more, it is one of the few Zelda titles not available in the Nintendo Switch Online Classic Game Library. Coincidence? We think not.

Final Thoughts

If Nintendo plans to keep revisiting its older games, Majora’s Mask should be near the top of the list. It’s directly connected to Ocarina of Time, has an established fanbase, and has an identity unlike almost anything else in the franchise.

More importantly, it gives Nintendo a chance to do something different: deliver an unsettling, emotional, and unapologetically strange Zelda adventure.
