Delta Air Lines (DAL) has been pushed into the spotlight after Zacks assigned the stock a Rank #5 Strong Sell, following sizeable cuts to near term earnings estimates and forecasts.
Recent trading shows that momentum in Delta Air Lines has cooled, with the share price down 1.83% over the last day and 3.97% over 30 days, and a 90 day share price decline of 8.34%. This sits alongside a much stronger 1 year total shareholder return of 41.17% and 148.46% over three years, hinting that the latest estimate cuts are being weighed against a still powerful longer term recovery story in the background.

Most Popular Narrative: 27% Overvalued
Against the last close at $80.15, the most followed narrative pegs Delta Air Lines closer to a fair value of $63.21, which frames today’s price as rich and puts the recent estimate cuts in sharper context.
Update as of 10 April: As written here in February, Delta is the leading carrier among the major US airlines and keeps that pole position even amidst the tariff-induced turmoil. True, the carrier had to jettison its record guidance for 2025 it had issued in January; still, Delta made a gross profit of roughly 1 cent per available seat mile in the traditionally weak winter quarter when other airlines struggle to turn any profit at all (my calculations from an adj. total revenue per seat mile (TRASM) of 18.97 cents and adj. cost per available seat mile (CASM incl. fuel) of 17.96 cents). Thus, the carrier made an almost exact landing at where I had estimated its margins a couple of weeks ago.

Result: Fair Value of $63.21 (OVERVALUED)
Still, Delta Air Lines faces clear spoilers to that view, including thinner industry margins and exposure to trade policy or travel demand shocks that could quickly reset expectations.

Another View: Market Ratios Point The Other Way
That fair value of $63.21 from the community narrative leans cautious on Delta Air Lines, yet current market ratios send a different signal. The stock trades on a P/E of 15.9x, while the fair ratio sits higher at 19.3x, and both the global airlines group at 11.9x and peers at 11.3x sit lower.
