4 Chicago men charged for stealing over $13k from gaming machines at suburban café

ADDISON, Ill. (WGN) – Four Chicago men have been charged after they allegedly broke into an Addison café and stole more than $13,000 from gaming machines.

The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said just after 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, authorities saw a black Dodge Durango and a white BMW, both of which had been reported stolen, traveling westbound on Lake Street from Bruce Avenue.

A few minutes later, both vehicles backed into the front parking spots at Maria’s Gaming Café, locating in the 0-100 block of East Lake Street in Addison. Five people, four of whom were armed, then broke into the business using large sledgehammers and a crowbar, according to authorities.

Once inside, the suspects reportedly smashed the gaming machines with their sledgehammers and removed the cash boxes before getting back into their stolen vehicles and driving off.

As they drove away, the BMW ran over spike strips, forcing the three occupants to get out of the car and into the Dodge Durango. Officers then tried to stop the Durango at Lake Street and Route 83, but it continued to driving on Route 83 toward North Avenue, reaching speeds of over 100 mph, according to investigators.

Prosecutors said officers later successfully spiked the Durango’s tires, forcing the now-eight people inside to get out and run away northbound, across I-290 and into an adjacent neighborhood near Van Buren and 31st Avenue in Bellwood.

Authorities added three guns fell out of the Durango when the suspects got out and ran away.

After searching the area with help from K-9 units and drones, authorities took four people into custody. Officers also searched the Durango and found a loaded Glock 22 with one bullet in the chamber, a 16-round magazine and a device affixed to the weapon that converts a semi-automatic handgun into a fully automatic gun.

Also in the vehicle were a loaded Glock 17C with one bullet in the chamber and a 31-round magazine, a loaded Zastava AK-style gun with one bullet in the chamber, a sledgehammer, a prybar and a cash box, according to officials.

Officers also searched the BMW and found a handgun in the front passenger seat, another gun in the middle rear seat and a sledgehammer in the rear seat area.

Further investigation found that the amount of money taken from the gaming machines totaled $13,847, according to prosecutors.
