Campus fashion is ever changing, with a plethora of new styles, trends and brands on display wherever you look.
College is a great place to experiment with clothing, discover new trending items and find inspiration just by walking to class and observing those around you. University Boulevard offers many shops that partake in these social media-driven trends, but which of them stick the most with University of Arizona students?
A survey was conducted asking a simple question: in or out? Students decided how they felt about current trends, and whether or not they thought if the item would last through the year.
The respondents were asked about five particular trending pieces: gauchos, flip flops, circle pendant necklaces, capri pants, off-shoulder tops and quarter sleeve tops. These particular items take inspiration from the early 2000’s, as this is not the first time capri pants have been at the top of the trends’ cycle.
High fashion brands like Miu Miu, Tom Ford and Gucci included these pants in past collections as a staple piece that brought a chic and elevated quality to a look.

Cropped pants like gauchos and capris are evidently making a comeback on campus, and students are stating that they are here to stay. Out of 21 students that responded to a survey, 20 stated that gaucho pants would still be trending by next year.
Fashion trends have been noted to cycle through every 20 years, so naturally many of these pieces draw heavy inspiration from early 2000’s trends, reimagining nostalgic items in a modern way.
The survey’s results showed that students strongly favor gauchos and flip flops in particular, and think that they will maintain their popularity.
However, the campus stretches much further than 21 students. So, will these items truly stay relevant, or will our campus move on to the next?
Another trend that is just starting to hit social media, and now the UA campus, is the quarter sleeve top.
Living in Arizona, local residents do not need to worry about dressing for warmth as the season transitions towards fall. The quarter sleeve could be the perfect solution that combines style and practicality, as it brings the fall aesthetic to an outfit without worrying about overheating.
Similar to the gaucho and capri pants, this is not the first time quarter sleeves have been at the forefront of trends. Fashion articles note Jane Birkin, a symbol of innovation and effortless French chic fashion, as a contributor to this ongoing trend.

The survey showed that UA students also heavily preferred quarter sleeve tops to stay relevant as compared to other items.
It seems that the items that have previously been popular are maintaining a timeless, fashionable feel that keeps them relevant through the decades. Items that are seen as fast-fashion fads, like the circle pendant necklace, were less favored by students.
Fashion cycles move quickly, and UA students seem to be ahead of the trends. Whether students gravitate towards vintage styles or embrace emerging trends, fashion inspiration can be found anywhere, even in past looks.
