Bundesliga Matchday 7 produced another entertaining weekend of German football, with Bayern Munich maintaining their unbeaten start, Borussia Dortmund securing an important victory over Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig recording the biggest win of the round.
Werder Bremen continued their impressive run with another victory inspired by Niclas Füllkrug, while Borussia Mönchengladbach claimed their first three points of the season against Stuttgart. Hoffenheim also produced one of the weekend’s biggest surprises by defeating Bayer Leverkusen 3-0.
Here are five players whose individual performances made the difference for their teams.
Niclas Füllkrug – Werder Bremen
Niclas Füllkrug continues to demonstrate why returning to Werder Bremen was one of the best decisions of his career.
The German international scored twice in Bremen’s 3-2 victory over Mainz, converting penalties in the seventh and 25th minutes to give Daniel Thioune’s side an early advantage.
Although Mainz fought back through Anthony Caci and Lee Jae-sung, Ludovit Reis scored Bremen’s third goal to secure an important away victory.
Füllkrug has now scored eight goals in seven Bundesliga matches, making him the competition’s leading goalscorer. His remarkable form is not only helping Bremen collect valuable points but also strengthening the argument that he deserves another opportunity with the Germany national team.
Rômulo – RB Leipzig
Rômulo was instrumental in RB Leipzig’s convincing 4-0 victory over newly promoted Elversberg.
After Tidiam Gomis opened the scoring shortly after half-time, the Brazilian striker doubled Leipzig’s advantage in the 66th minute before completing his brace in stoppage time. Christoph Baumgartner also found the net as Martín Demichelis’ side secured their fourth Bundesliga victory of the campaign.
Rômulo’s movement inside the penalty area and ability to convert opportunities demonstrated why he can become an important attacking option for Leipzig.
After an inconsistent start to the season, Leipzig need their forwards to produce goals regularly if they are to challenge for European qualification. Rômulo’s performance provided exactly that.
Joe Scally – Borussia Mönchengladbach
Joe Scally played an important role as Borussia Mönchengladbach secured their first Bundesliga victory of the season with a dramatic 3-2 win away at Stuttgart.
The American defender scored Gladbach’s equaliser in the 38th minute after Ermedin Demirović had given Stuttgart an early lead.
Shuto Machino and Wael Mohya subsequently extended Gladbach’s advantage before Demirović scored again late in the match, but the visitors held on for a desperately needed victory.
Scally’s goal was particularly significant given Gladbach’s difficult start to the campaign. His attacking contribution helped change the momentum of the match and provided an important foundation for a result that could restore some confidence within the squad.
Andrej Kramarić – Hoffenheim
Andrej Kramarić transformed Hoffenheim’s encounter against Bayer Leverkusen after coming off the bench, inspiring Christian Ilzer’s side to a surprising 3-0 victory.
With the match still goalless, the Croatian converted a penalty in the 79th minute to score Hoffenheim’s 1,000th Bundesliga goal.
He then provided the assist for Alexander Prass to double the advantage before his own effort struck the crossbar, allowing Max Moerstedt to score the third in stoppage time.
Kramarić’s influence was particularly impressive considering he only entered the match in the second half. His experience, creativity and composure helped Hoffenheim end Leverkusen’s five-match unbeaten run and secure their first Bundesliga clean sheet of the season.
Dayot Upamecano – Bayern Munich
Dayot Upamecano delivered an outstanding all-round performance as Bayern Munich defeated Freiburg 3-1 to maintain their position at the top of the Bundesliga.
The French defender produced one of the most impressive individual sequences of the weekend in the 16th minute. After stopping a Freiburg attack inside Bayern’s penalty area, Upamecano helped initiate a counterattack, carried his run forward and eventually finished the move himself following an assist from Michael Olise.
Serge Gnabry doubled Bayern’s advantage before half-time, while Olise scored in stoppage time after Freiburg had reduced the deficit through a Tom Bischof own goal.
Beyond his goal, Upamecano recorded more touches than any Bayern teammate, produced one of the team’s highest passing accuracy figures and won 58% of his duels.
His performance demonstrated why he remains such an important figure in Bayern’s defensive structure, combining physical strength with the confidence to contribute to attacking transitions.
Matchday 7 offered another fascinating collection of individual performances. Füllkrug continued his remarkable goalscoring form, Rômulo inspired Leipzig, Scally helped Gladbach secure their first victory, Kramarić transformed Hoffenheim’s attack and Upamecano produced an exceptional performance at both ends of the pitch.
All five demonstrated how individual quality can influence matches in different ways, making them deserving selections among the Bundesliga’s standout performers this weekend.
